"The Thirty Years War, fought between 1618 and 1648, was a ruthless struggle for political and religious control of central Europe. Engulfing most of present-day Germany, the war claimed at least ten million lives. The lengthy conflict was particularly hard on the general population, as thousands of undisciplined mercenaries serving Sweden, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and various German principalities, robbed, murdered, and pillaged communities; disease spread out of control and starvation became commonplace. In The Warwolf, Hermann Lons' acclaimed historical novel, the tragedy and horrors of war in general, and these times in particular are revealed. The Warwolf, based on the author's careful research, traces the life of Harm Wulf, a land-owning peasant farmer of the northern German heath who realizes after witnessing the murder of neighbors and family at the hands of marauding troops that he has a choice between compromising his morals or succumbing to inevitable torture and death. Despite his desire for peace, Wulf decides to band with his fellow farmers and live like "wolves," fiercely protecting their isolated communities from all intruders. Lons' brilliant portrayal of the two sides of any person who has faced a moral crisis--in Harm Wulf's case, whether to kill or be killed--continues to resonate. Originally published in 1910 and still in print in Germany, The Warwolf is now available for the first time in modern English."--Publisher's website.

The War Wolf recounts the opening battle of 1066 as King Hardrada of Norway out manoeuvres King Harold of England by landing the largest Viking army ever to set foot in the north of the kingdom. His objective is to capture York, the capital of Northumbria, and in this he is aided by Tostig Godwinson, the traitorous brother of the King of England. Unaware of the coming danger Coenred the Huscarl, an elite warrior of the Saxon army, considers retiring to his estate. His relationship with his young lords, Edwin and Morcar, has become strained and although in the prime of life he tires of following the way of the sword. In York he meets the beautiful young widow Mildryth who comes to him seeking protection, she has a presentiment that the shadow of her husband's murderer Tostig Godwinson will fall upon her again. As Coenred looks to choose the life of a theign on his farm in Holderness news comes of a massive Viking fleet sailing up the River Humber, bound for York. Honour will not allow Coenred to abandon his fellow huscarls, his lords, or the people of York to the threat of conquest by their ancient enemy. King Harold remains in the south, unaware of the danger and with one eye on the movement of the Normans who wait for a clear day to sail their own invasion force to England. It falls to Coenred as servant to Eorl Edwin and his brother Eorl Morcar, to meet the War Wolf in combat. For embittered Tostig Godwinson a quest for revenge on those who toppled him from his once high station as the Eorl of Northumbria has brought him into an unholy alliance with the King of Norway. He seeks the blood of both Eorl Edwin and Eorl Morcar who inflicted an ignominious defeat upon him a few months before. Even more so he plans the destruction of his elder brother who recommended his banishment to old King Edward. Where once there was brotherly love there is now only hate of the most vindictive kind. England is in a precarious state but so is Norway. A long and fruitless war against Denmark has left King Hardrada with an empty treasury and stained reputation. The greatest Viking of his day Hardrada sails to England to capture a crown that sits uneasily upon the head of Harold Godwinson, but he has had to make alliances to rebuild his army, alliances with the Jarls of Orkney, and even with the old enemy, the Saxons themselves. Amidst the confusion stalk the likes of Wulfhere, thief and murderer with one eye always open for an opportunity to enrich himself at the cost of another. He has spied out Mildryth and believes her to be due a small fortune in compensation for the death of her husband at the hands of the king's brother. When the men are away at battle women such as her are vulnerable to men such as he. When King Harold hears the news of the Viking invasion in the north he chooses not to move from London but rather trust to his cousins Edwin and Morcar to close the gates of York and hold the city against the King of Norway. The young eorls, however, continue their father's jealousy of the House of Wessex and seek glory to match the Godwinsons. They do not believe that they can achieve that by hiding behind the Roman walls of York, instead they plan to meet the Vikings at Fulford Gate and win a matchless victory over them. Despite his high standing Coenred cannot change the course of the young eorls and so he must stand in the shield-wall with his brother warriors at the Battle of Fulford Gate and fight for his life and the lives of all those depending upon him, against a man who has never lost a battle; against the War Wolf himself!

One of the most extraordinary and poignant survival stories to come out of World War II; Misha was only six years old when her parents were taken away from their home in Belgium to Auschwitz. She was given a new name, a new home, and forced into a new religion. No one told her why her parents were no longer with her, only that they had gone East. So one day, equipped only with a tiny compass and a few provisions, she set out East to find them. Misha crossed Belgium, Germany and Poland on foot alone - until, close to starvation in a vast forest, she was adopted by a family of wolves. She ate and played with the wolf cubs, and was protected by their mother. Finally, at the end of the war, she found her way home to Belgium via the Ukraine, Romania and Italy. She never found her parents.

On November 30, 1916, an apparently ordinary freighter left harbor in Kiel, Germany, and would not touch land again for another fifteen months. It was the beginning of an astounding 64,000-mile voyage that was to take the ship around the world, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation in her wake. For this was no ordinary freighter—this was the Wolf, a disguised German warship. In this gripping account of an audacious and lethal World War I expedition, Richard Guilliatt and Peter Hohnen depict the Wolf ’s assignment: to terrorize distant ports of the British Empire by laying minefields and sinking freighters, thus hastening Germany’s goal of starving her enemy into submission. Yet to maintain secrecy, she could never pull into port or use her radio, and to comply with the rules of sea warfare, her captain fastidiously tried to avoid killing civilians aboard the merchant ships he attacked, taking their crews and passengers prisoner before sinking the vessels. The Wolf thus became a huge floating prison, with more than 400 captives, including a number of women and children, from twenty-five different nations. Sexual affairs were kindled between the German crew and some female prisoners. A six-year-old American girl, captured while sailing across the Pacific with her parents, was adopted as a mascot by the Germans. Forced to survive on food and fuel plundered from other ships, facing death from scurvy, and hunted by the combined navies of five Allied nations, the Germans and their prisoners came to share a common bond. The will to survive transcended enmities of race, class, and nationality. It was to be one of the most daring clandestine naval missions of modern times. Under the command of Captain Karl Nerger, who conducted his deadly business with an admirable sense of chivalry, the Wolf traversed three of the world’s major oceans and destroyed more than thirty Allied vessels. We learn of the world through which the Wolf moved, with all its social divisions and xenophobia, its bravery and stoicism, its combination of old-world social mores and rapid technological change. The story of this epic voyage is a vivid real-life narrative and simultaneously a richly detailed picture of a world being profoundly transformed by war.

In the years 1916-1918, the Wolf, an ordinary freighter fitted-out with a hidden arsenal of weapons, was sent by Germany on one of the most daring clandestine naval missions of modern times. Under the command of Kapitan Karl Nerger, the ship undertook a continuous fifteen-month cruise in which she traversed three of the world's major oceans, destroyed more than thirty Allied vessels and captured over 400 men, women and children. During this time the Wolf maintained radio silence and never pulled into port, surviving on fuel and food plundered from captured ships. Equipped with the era's newest technological marvels the Wolf was an instrument of terror in a new age of mechanised warfare. In The Wolf, Richard Guilliatt & Peter Hohnen bring this little-known story to life by drawing on dozens of eyewitness accounts, unpublished memoirs, declassified government files, newspaper reports and family archives unearthed during three years of intensive research in several countries. What emerges from these accounts is a richly-detailed picture of the world through which the Wolf moved, with all its social divisions and naked xenophobia, its spirit of bravery and stoicism, its paradoxical combination of old-world social mores and rapid technological change. This extraordinary adventure story exhibits the tremendous impact that one lone, audacious German warship made on the people of many nations during the final two years of the First World War.

ONE OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED NAVAL HISTORY TITLES OF 2009 IS OUT NOW IN PAPERBACK. July 1917: the First World War is about to enter its fourth horrendous year and ships are mysteriously disappearing off Australia and New Zealand as a young Australian woman named Mary Cameron sails with her husband and daughter across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Less than a thousand miles from Sydney, a black-hulled freighter appears out of the vast blue emptiness, and Mary and her daughter rush to the deck to greet her. Suddenly, two hinged iron sections of the freighter's bulwarks drop down to reveal she is bristling with guns. She is in fact the German warship the Wolf, and the Cameron family are about to find themselves captive on one of the century's most extraordinary wartime sea voyages. Sent by Germany on a suicide mission to the far side of the world, the Wolf was a formidable and ingenious commerce-raider. Her task was to inflict maximum destruction on Allied shipping using all the latest technology of warfare - torpedoes, mines, cannons, smokescreens, wireless receivers, even a seaplane. It was an assignment so secret that she could never pull in to port or transmit any radio signal. In one continual 64,000-mile voyage, the ship caused havoc across three oceans, launched Germany's first direct attacks on Australia and New Zealand and captured over 400 men, women and children. Surviving on fuel and food plundered from other ships, the Wolf became a world in miniature as her 350-strong crew and their prisoners crowded together in an improbable survival story. Drawn from eyewitness accounts, declassified government files and unpublished diaries and correspondence discovered during five years of research, this is the story of the Wolf's voyage, one of the most remarkable but little-known episodes of the First World War. An extraordinary adventure story, THE WOLF is also a portrait of a world undergoing profound transformation.
