Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III A GREAT SECRET The four village officials did not get away any too soon, for scarcely had they gone into the garden when three mischievous girls came tiptoeing slowly and very carefully around the corner of the inn, intending to hide behind the lilac bush that was near the front door, in hopes of hearing what the burgomaster was saying. Two of them were dairymaids, dressed in their pretty holiday frocks and with their long flaxen braids tied with little red satin bows. The third one, who was the oldest and the tallest and the prettiest, with mischievous brown eyes and the blackest of black hair, was Hulda, the miller's daughter. Hulda was always called the miller's daughter, but as a matter of fact she was really an orphan, and good Miller Dinkel and his wife (who had no children of their own) were only her foster parents. They had taken her when she was a mere baby, so that she hadnever known any other father and mother; and the village folks often wondered whether Dinkel and his wife did not sometimes wish they had not been in such a hurry to adopt her; for, to tell the truth, Hulda was a very wilful girl and gave her kind old foster parents many a heartache with ner temper and her naughty pranks. Indeed, she gave them more trouble than all her foster sisters and brothers put together; for you must know that the Dinkels had brought up several boys and girls. Like all the good married couples ofthe village they were very fond of children, and you would be surprised to know how many little orphans had been brought to Olenberg from far-away towns and cities, to be taken care of by one family or another among the good, kind-hearted people of this little village. When Hulda and her companions discovered that the burgomaster had gone they were greatly sur...

Historic preservation, whether of landscapes or buildings, was an important development of the nineteenth century in many countries. There is however surprisingly little understanding about how it took place, and research into it is narrowly focused. For example, generally landscape preservation from this time is examined separately from buildings; preservation is seen in terms of national narratives, or considered within the contexts of area studies, and it is usually seen from a specific disciplinary perspective. All of these later categorizations did not apply at the time and consequently, a very partial view is achieved. In order to begin unlocking a very complex phenomenon that has helped to define our own age, this dynamic collection of essays brings together an international and transdisciplinary line-up of academics and practitioners to reconsider preservation's origins in the second half of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth century. With a focus on Britain and the British Empire, and including case studies from the United States, Canada, Sweden, France, Germany, Sri Lanka, 'The Holy Land', and Turkey, this book places preservation in imperial, international, and national contexts, demonstrating that there was far more interaction between different countries in this arena than may be supposed and revealing remarkable but hitherto hidden overlaps and intersections. It examines three main themes: the influence of religion; the political and sub-diplomatic aspects of preservation; and the professionalization of preservation practice. Internationalizing trends already existed through the churches, the universities, and the diplomatic services, as well as familial ties that had an important impact on preservation's epistemic communities and its targets. Other internationalizing factors include an interest in national histories and the histories of architecture and art, particularly when known through illustration; a growing interest in biography especially of 'founding fathers' or famous literary figures; and tourism. Although the focus is on architectural preservation, this book demonstrates that, in this formative period, the preservation of buildings and landscapes needs to be considered together - as it often was at the time - and in context. The conclusion reached is that the preservation movement has to be understood in imperial and international contexts, rather than in simply national or regional ones.

Secession And The Union In Texas written by Walter L. Buenger and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-18 with History categories.

This history of secession in the Lone Star State offers both a vivid narrative and a powerful case study of the broader secession movement. In 1845, Texans voted overwhelmingly to join the Union. Then, in 1861, they voted just as overwhelmingly to secede. The story of why and how that happened is filled with colorful characters, raiding Comanches, German opponents of slavery, and a border with Mexico. It also has important implications for our understanding of secession across the South. Combining social and political history, Walter L. Buenger explores issues such as public hysteria, the pressure for consensus, and the vanishing of a political process in which rational debate about secession could take place. Drawing on manuscript collections and contemporary newspapers, Buenger also analyzes election returns, population shifts, and the breakdown of populations within Texas counties. Buenger demonstrates that Texans were not simply ardent secessionists or committed unionists. At the end of 1860, the majority fell between these two extremes, creating an atmosphere of ambivalence toward secession which was not erased even by the war.
