Tree Hollows And Wildlife Conservation In Australia written by Philip Gibbons and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-04-05 with Science categories.

More than 300 species of Australian native animals — mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians — use tree hollows, but there has never been a complete inventory of them. Many of these species are threatened, or are in decline, because of land-use practices such as grazing, timber production and firewood collection. All forest management agencies in Australia attempt to reduce the impact of logging on hollow-dependent fauna, but the nature of our eucalypt forests presents a considerable challenge. In some cases, tree hollows suitable for vertebrate fauna may take up to 250 years to develop, which makes recruiting and perpetuating this resource very difficult within the typical cycle of human-induced disturbance regimes. Tree Hollows and Wildlife Conservation in Australia is the first comprehensive account of the hollow-dependent fauna of Australia and introduces a considerable amount of new data on this subject. It not only presents a review and analysis of the literature, but also provides practical approaches for land management.

A book for amateur naturalists, visitors, tour operators, students of environmental science and anyone else fascinated with Australian nature. The major groups of mammals, reptiles, frogs and other native fauna are outlined, highlighting differences from other world regions, explaining where their ancestors came from (and thus why there are similarities with some countries), how they are adapted to Australia's ecosystems, and some of the conservation problems they now face. It includes advice on where to encounter various species and groups, and how to observe them with minimal disturbance. It is not an identification guide, but it does help narrow down the possibilities to use in conjunction with identification aids. References to many other useful publications and websites are included. This edition is in grey-scale to keep the price down to a level affordable by all who are interested in quickly deepening their understanding of our country's wildlife. Tips are offered to assist the reader's memory of our major wildlife groups. The book has been through various incarnations. It started as a group of lecture notes when the author was lecturing to university students on Techniques for Wildlife Conservation and was unable to find a good, affordable textbook to recommend to students for a comprehensive overview of Australia's major groups of fauna and flora. It was later edited as lecture notes for an adult education course on the Wildlife of Southeast Queensland. When the author started running educational wildlife tours for her company (Araucaria Ecotours) she edited once again and turned it into a free booklet for guests on her tours. This booklet has now been through several editions, and finally expanded into book form. The language is nontechnical for readability by tourists and nature enthusiasts who lack a biological background, but with some explanations of common scientific terms, and it is sufficiently comprehensive to be useful also to students of environmental science and environmental consultants.

There is nothing to beat the extraordinary wildlife of Australia. Its colourful parrots, its venomous snakes, its abundance of hopping marsupials and the strange, egg-laying Platypus - these are just a few of the players in a story that began hundreds of millions of year ago. Many members of Australia's wildlife live nowhere else on Earth. They are unique, the result of evolution on a continent that has been geographically isolated from the rest of the world for 38 million years. Wildlife of Australia is an account of how these animals have developed in response to changing climates and habitats. It describes their day-to-day habits, where they live, how they find partners and care for their young, and how they protect themselves and find food and shelter. Superbly illustrated with over 550 colour photographs by renowned wildlife photographer Jiri Lochman, the book also contains a list of scientific names, good zoos and wildlife parks, useful websites and books, and a comprehensive glossary. Wildlife of Australia reveals the fascinating worlds of the animals that live all around us on this ancient land but remain largely unnoticed.

Field Guide To Wildlife Of The Australian Snow Country written by Ken Green and has been published by Reed New Holland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Mountain animals categories.

This is a comprehensive field guide to Australia's high mountain fauna and environment - an environment that extends for more than five degrees of latitude. Exploring the inter-relationships between snow cover and wildlife, the authors combine ecological details and species accounts. At the heart of the book are detailed descriptions of the mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, fish, insects and other invertebrates, including their distribution, breeding, food and habitats. A completely updated edition of the authorative Wildlife of the Australian Snow Country (first published in 1994), this book extends the fifteen years' extensive fieldwork and research on aspects of the ecology of alpine wildlife by another fifteen years. It updates the reader on the many changes that have occurred in that time: the visible impacts of climate change on animal species and habitats, the decline of high mountain frogs due to the chytrid fungus, and the impacts of high altitude fires in 2003 and 2006. A Field Guide to the Wildlife of the Australian Snow Country is indispensible for the professional and amateur naturalist alike - and anyone interested in the rich natural world of Australia's snow country. In a handy format with PVC cover to protect it from the elements, it is equally at home in a backpack or a reference library.
