Im europäischen Mittelalter gab es eine lange Zeitspanne, in der das Betreiben von Naturwissenschaft zusammen mit der Religion kein Selbstverständnis war. Die intensive Beschäftigung mit den verschiedensten Disziplinen der Naturwissenschaften, wie sie im europäischen Mittelalter vorzufinden war, barg in zunehmender Weise die Gefahr, von der Zensur der römischen Inquisition sanktioniert zu werden. Im Gegensatz dazu verlief die Beschäftigung mit den Naturwissenschaften im islamischen Mittelalter ganz anders als seinerzeit im Westen Europas. Das lag vor allem daran, dass Muslime sich von Anfang an durch ihre Heilige Schrift dazu ermutigt fühlten, die Welt um sich herum zu beobachten und die daraus resultierenden Mechanismen genauestens zu studieren. Im Qur'an gibt es unzählige Verse, die den Anstoß zur wissenschaftlichen Forschung geben. Diese Studie von Caner Taslaman stellt in der zeitgenössischen Diskussion um die Kompatibilität von Religion und Wissenschaft auch erstmals für den deutschen Leser eine immense Bereicherung dar. Taslamans Beitrag zeichnet sich ausdrücklich dadurch aus, dass sich sein Forschungsgebiet nicht nur auf die Naturwissenschaften beschränkt, sondern auch dadurch, dass er auch aufgrund seiner akademischen Gelehrsamkeit in Philosophie und Theologie bestens geschult ist. Die vorliegenden Abhandlungen unterstreichen, dass sich Naturwissenschaft und Theologie keineswegs gegenseitig ausschließen.
