Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. The designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very restricted space. The International Conference on Environment: Survival and Sustainability, held at the Near East University, Nicosia, Northern Cyprus 19-24 February 2007, dealt with environmental threats and proposed solutions at all scales. The 21 themes addressed by the conference fell into four broad categories; Threats to Survival and Sustainability; Technological Advances towards Survival and Sustainability; Activities and Tools for Social Change; Defining Goals for Sustainable Societies. Activities and tools that move the society towards greater sustainability were emphasized at the conference. These included environmental law and ethics, environmental knowledge, technology and information systems, media, environmental awareness, education and lifelong learning, the use of literature for environmental awareness, the green factor in politics, international relations and environmental organizations. The breadth of the issues addressed at the conference made clear the need for greatly increased interdisciplinary and international collaboration the survival and sustainability concept. The exchanges at the conference represent a step in this direction.

This book analyzes economic developments of Indonesia and Nigeria during the period 1950-85. It addresses why Indonesia was so much more successful than Nigeria during this period. The book consists of three parts. Part I focuses on Nigeria and part II on Indonesia. The first chapters in each part provide a narrative of the political economy, focusing on the various phases since 1950. This is followed by a chapter summarizing the effects on economic growth and poverty. The large divergences in outcome must be attributed to differences in economic policies. It first considers policies in the factor and product markets that mediated between factor endowments and the growth and distributional outcomes. Then it turns to the broader array of economic policies. Finally, it attempts to relate policies to the underlying political processes and interest groups that generated them. Each part concludes by explaining the salient economic outcomes as a result of both policy and the underlying politics. Part III features a concluding comparison by using economic histories to compare the two countries. First it examines the outcomes, then the policies. Finally it contrasts the political processes and interest groups that it suggests account for these important policy differences.

In the Catholic countries of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Europe, communities of monks and nuns were growing in number and wealth. By 1750 there were at least 25,000 communities containing at least 350,000 inmates. They constructed vast buildings, dominated education, and played a large part in the practice and patronage of learning, music, and the arts. They also fulfilled an amazing variety of political, economic and social roles, notably in providing career opportunities for women. Yet many accounts of the period ignore them altogether. Prosperity and Plunder recovers this forgotten dimension of European history, assesses the importance of monasteries across Catholic Europe, and compares their position in different countries. It goes on to explain the almost complete destruction of the monasteries between 1750 and 1815 through reforming rulers, 'Enlightenment', and the French Revolution, and asks how much society gained and lost in the process.
