Die sich daraus entwickelnde Kontroverse, ging in die Geschichte als Positivismusstreit in der deutschen Soziologie bzw. als Methodenstreit ein. Thema der beiden Hauptreferenten war "Die Logik der Sozialwissenschaften". Als Hauptreferenten wurden zwei Personen ausgew hlt, von denen man annehmen konnte, dass ihre Auffassung zu diesem Thema so entgegengesetzt ist, dass ihre Referate die gew nschte Kontroverse ber die Thematik auch erf llen w rden. Man entschied sich einerseits f r Karl R. Popper, Vertreter des Kritischen Rationalismus, und anderseits f r Theodor W. Adorno, als Vertreter der Kritischen Theorie. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, die Positionen der beiden Hauptreferenten, Popper und Adorno, herauszuarbeiten und die Frage nach den moralischen und politischen Positionen der beiden Theorien zu kl ren. Zun chst werden die beiden Referenten kurz skizziert, um den Einstieg zu erleichtern. In einem zweiten Schritt werde die wesentlichen inhaltlichen Kern- und Kritikpunkte beider Referate vorgestellt und in einem weiterem Abschnitt miteinander verglichen. Erg nzt werden sollen die beiden Referate durch die, m.E. wichtige, unterschiedliche Auffassung von Geschichte. Zum Schluss dieser Hausarbeit wird die aufgestellte Frage nach der Fruchtbarkeit der Referate aufgenommen und ein m gliches Fazit formuliert.

Stephen Turner has explored the ongms of social science in this pioneering study of two nineteenth century themes: the search for laws of human social behavior, and the accumulation and analysis of the facts of such behavior through statistical inquiry. The disputes were vigorously argued; they were over questions of method, criteria of explanation, interpretations of probability, understandings of causation as such and of historical causation in particular, and time and again over the ways of using a natural science model. From his careful elucidation of John Stuart Mill's proposals for the methodology of the social sciences on to his original analysis of the methodological claims and practices of Emile Durkheim and Max Weber, Turner has beautifully traced the conflict between statistical sociology and a science offactual description on the one side, and causal laws and a science of nomological explanation on the other. We see the works of Comte and Quetelet, the critical observations of Herschel, Buckle, Venn and Whewell, and the tough scepticism of Pearson, all of these as essential to the works of the classical founders of sociology. Is the objective that the European Union set itself in 2000, that is, to be «the most competitive knowledge-based society and economy» by 2010 still realistic? The momentous year has arrived, but it is discouraging to note that very few steps have been made in the direction that was fixed. What has gone wrong? Were the philosophical, epistemological and economic conditions adequate to achieve the desired result? This book – the result of a research project commissioned by the European Commission – critically investigates the society of knowledge and the way in which the European Union has proceeded towards it, examining first of all the premises and the contributions that the disciplines of Science and Technological Studies can provide. In this way, we have proposed innovative theoretical and epistemological bases for a multidisciplinary approach – making use of the Modelling Approach to Science – and therefore insisting on the function that human sciences can have for a society of knowledge that hinges not so much on an industrialist scenario, but a humanist one that eschews hyper-specialization and instead privileges creativity, flexibility, imagination and innovation economy.
