Since its publication in Spanish in 1998, The Grid and the Park not only revitalized studies on the history of Buenos Aires, but also laid the foundation for a specific type of cultural work on the city —an urban perspective for cultural history, as its author would describe it— that has had a sustained impact in Latin America. Public space, embodied in the grid of city blocks and the park system, here appears as a particularly productive category because it encompasses dimensions of the material city, politics, and culture, which are usually studied separately. From Domingo Faustino Sarmiento’s figurations of Palermo Park in the mid-nineteenth century to Jorge Luis Borges’s discovery of the suburb in the 1920s; from the modernization of the traditional center carried out by Mayor Torcuato de Alvear in the 1880s to the questioning of that centrality by the emergence of the suburban barrio, the book weaves the changing ideas on public space with urban culture to produce a new history of the metropolitan expansion of Buenos Aires, one of the most extensive and dynamic urban centers of the early twentieth century.

This study explores the composition and performance of liturgical music in El Escorial, from its founding by Philip II in 1563 to the death of Charles II in 1700. Philip II promoted within his monastery-palace a musical foundation whose dual function as royal chapel and as monastery in the service of a Counter-Reformation monarch was unique. The study traces the ways in which music styles and practices responded to the changing functions of the institution. Perceived notions about Spanish royal musical patronage are challenged, musical manuscripts are scrutinized, biographical details of hundreds of musicians are uncovered, and musical practices are examined. El Club Atlético Boca Juniors es conocido mundialmente como una institución de fútbol, pero, como todos los clubes de fútbol argentinos, no es solamente eso. En 1919, la difusión esta disciplina tuvo que ver seguramente con que la practicaban especialmente los inmigrantes que habitaban La Boca, varios de ellos genoveses (xeneizes), ya que, justamente, se trataba de un deporte de gran raigambre en esa región de Italia, la Liguria, algo más que forma parte de la Identidad Xeneize del Club, le bocce. En la actualidad, cayó en el olvido de algunos, pero por respeto a esa Identidad, y a lo histórico de la disciplina, a Ulises Barreiro, por su participación en la subcomisión de Historia del departamento de Cultura y por ser profesor de Historia, le nació esta "gran" inquietud de investigar la historia de las Bochas en Boca. Surgieron muchos datos y anécdotas que marcan, claramente, que era necesario para el club escribir este pedazo de historia (y, seguramente, impulsará a otros a hacer algo similar en relación a las otras disciplinas deportivas de la institución). El producto final es este libro, el primero sobre la historia de este deporte en un club, publicado en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, que lo muestra como uno de los más ganadores de Boca, cuando estaba invisibilizado. ¡Felicitaciones a Ulises por su obra! ¡Gracias por su empeño, laboriosidad y dedicación para que se concrete! ¡A disfrutar de su lectura, que rescata años de parte de nuestra historia boquense!
