Until well into the nineteenth century scholars have repeated a tra ditional view of Anabaptism when they turn to Reformation history. They have regarded the Zwickau Prophets and Thomas Miintzer as the instigators of the movement. The radical disturbance caused by the Prophets and Miintzer in Wittenberg and the Saxon lands spread to Switzerland, there to plague Zwingli and his following. In both regions a radical spiritualism was the dominating element of the movement. Anabaptism reached its peak of development in the forceful establish ment of the Kingdom of Miinster. Most historians have devoted the major part of their discourse on Anabaptism to this model of fanati cism. After the rebellion was suppressed a rather pious but nonetheless harsh converted priest named Menno Simons collected the dispersed elements and attempted to direct them into more peaceful channels. Other leaders, like David J oris, continued the radical spiritualism if not the civil disorder. In this picture of the movement historians have insisted on regarding more highly the similarities rather than the differences in religious ideas of men such as Miintzer, Storch, Carlstadt, Grebel, Manz, Sattler, Denk, Marpeck, Matthys, Jan van Leyden, Joris, and Menno Simons. Even a cursory perusal of the writings of the Reformers - particularly those of Luther, Melanchthon, Menius, and Bullinger - reveals the identity of this traditional picture with that of the sixteenth-century polemicists.

Excerpt from Zur Feier: Des Reformationsfestes, und des Übergangs des Rectorats Akademische Gelegenheits und Festschriften haben sich heutzutage der Aufmerksamheit nicht mehr zu erfreuen, welche man ihnen früher wohl zu widmen pflegte; und wenn sie auch nach alter Gewohnheit noch geschrieben und veröffentlicht und an die Berechtigten vertheilt werden, so weiss man doch, dass sie meist einem dunkeln und unbeachteten Dasein entgegengehn, und nur die Herrn Bibliothekare schenken ihnen fort während wenigstens eine generelle Aufmerksamkeit, indem sie viel zu sagen wissen von der Sorge, welche ihnen die Unterbringung dieser Masse von Programmen mache, durch die jede ordentliche Bibliothek verdorben werde. Gleichwohl würde es zu bedauern sein, wenn man den alten Brauch aufgeben wollte, denn er gibt doch den mit seiner Wahrnehmung Betrauten Gelegenheit, namentlich Specialitaten zu behandeln, zu deren Veröffentlichung sich sonst nicht leicht die Möglichkeit findet, und an welchen nicht gar viel verloren ist, wenn sie dem Loose der Vergessen heit verfallen. Solche Erwägungen sind es, welche bei der Wahl des Themas der vorliegenden Abhandlung mitgewirkt haben. Die Beziehung eines Gelehrten zu dergleichen Specialitäten aber hat der Natur der Sache nach in der Regel auch ihre besondere Geschichte, und wenn schon Dante uns nicht durch den üblichen Gang allgemein wissenschaftlicher Studien entgegengebracht wird, sondern ein jeder, der sich eingehender mit ihm beschäftigt, von besondern Erlebnissen, welche ihn dazu veranlasst haben, und die sich zuerst als Zufälligkeiten ansehen, die er aber später als eine günstige Führung preist, zu erzählen haben wird, wie dies jüngst noch von dem ehrwürdigen Veteranen Karl Witte im Vorwort zu seinen Dante Forschungen 1) geschehen ist: so möge um so mehr gestattet sein, der sachlichen Begründung der Zusammenstellung zwischen Boetius und Dante die persönliche vorausgehen zu lassen. Over the last twenty years research on the Reformation in Germany has shifted both chronologically and thematically toward an interest in the ’long’ or ’delayed’ Reformations, and the structure and operation of the Holy Roman Empire. Whilst this focus has resulted in many fascinating new insights, it has also led to the relative neglect of the early Reformation movement. Put together with the explicit purpose of encouraging scholars to reengage with the early ’storm years’ of the German Reformation, this collection of eleven essays by Tom Scott, explores several issues in the historiography of the early Reformation which have not been adequately addressed. The debate over the nature and function of anticlericalism remains unresolved; the mainsprings of iconoclasm are still imperfectly understood; the ideological role of evangelical doctrines in stimulating and legitimising popular rebellion - above all in the German Peasants’ War - remains contentious, while the once uniform view of Anabaptism has given way to a recognition of the plurality and diversity of religious radicalism. Equally, there are questions which, initially broached, have then been sidelined with undue haste: the failure of Reforming movements in certain German cities, or the perception of what constituted heresy in the eyes of the Reformers themselves, and not least, the part played by women in the spread of evangelical doctrines. Consisting of seven essays previously published in scholarly journals and edited volumes, together with three new chapters and an historical afterword, Scott’s volume serves as a timely reminder of the importance of the early decades of the sixteenth century. By reopening seemingly closed issues and by revisiting neglected topics the volume contributes to a more nuanced understanding of what the Reformation in Germany entailed.
