All The Difference In The World written by Natalie Melas and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book is about culture and comparison. Starting with the history of the discipline of comparative literature and its forgotten relation to the positivist comparative method, it inquires into the idea of comparison in a postcolonial world. Comparison was Eurocentric by exclusion when it applied only to European literature, and Eurocentric by discrimination when it adapted evolutionary models to place European literature at the forefront of human development. This book argues that inclusiveness is not a sufficient response to postcolonial and multiculturalist challenges because it leaves the basis of equivalence unquestioned. The point is not simply to bring more objects under comparison, but rather to examine the process of comparison. The book offers a new approach to the either/or of relativism and universalism, in which comparison is either impossible or assimilatory, by focusing instead on various forms of “incommensurability”—comparisons in which there is a ground for comparison but no basis for equivalence. Each chapter develops a particular form of such cultural comparison from readings of important novelists (Joseph Conrad, Simone Schwartz-Bart), poets (Aimé Césaire, Derek Walcott), and theorists (Edouard Glissant, Jean-Luc Nancy).

Making All The Difference written by Martha Minow and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Law categories.

Martha Minow here takes a hard look at the way our legal system functions. She confronts a variety of dilemmas of difference resulting from contradictory legal strategies--strategies that attempt to correct inequalities by sometimes recognizing and sometimes ignoring differences. Minow argues, in effect, for a reconstructed jurisprudence based on the ability to recognize and work with perceptible forms of difference.

They Made All The Difference written by Eileen Wirth and has been published by Loyola Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06 with Education categories.

At a time when so many public and private school systems are burdened with woes, Jesuit high schools are thriving. Enrollments, budgets, and endowments are growing; alumni support is strong; and the schools enjoy an impressive reputation for academic and athletic excellence. Jesuit educators are even taking bold steps to develop new schools to serve poor and disadvantaged students. Eileen Wirth, a university professor and parent of a Jesuit high school student, explains how the remarkable success of Jesuit high schools is rooted in a centuries-old vision marked by acute sensitivity to the individual, fierce commitment to excellence, concern for the poor, and a spirituality that prizes self-knowledge and flexibility. By visiting Jesuit high schools all over the country, conducting interviews, studying countless books, and visiting every Jesuit high school Web site, Wirth learned--and eagerly shares with her readers--how Ignatian spirituality imbues every conceivable dimension of a Jesuit high school education. From football to freshman retreats, fund-raising to finding God in all things, They Made All the Difference details the incomparable success of Jesuit high schools and their far-reaching effects.Jesuit high schools make a world of difference. Their graduates make a difference in the world.Take a look at any Jesuit high school in the United States, and immediately you'll be struck by the fact that there is something different about its academics, as well as its athletics, student life, discipline, and spirituality. But what makes these high schools so different and also so successful? The key is a compelling educational vision that dates back nearly five hundred years to St. Ignatius of Loyola. Throughout this book, that vision is articulated and shown to be embodied in the students, faculty, and alumni of Jesuit high schools. Through fascinating and life-changing stories from Jesuit high schools, biographies of notable Jesuit high school alumni (including, among others, journalist Tim Russert, comedian Bob Newhart, Olympic medalist Kate Johnson, and actor/singer Harry Connick Jr.), and individual profiles of each Jesuit high school, readers will come to know and admire the schools and the people who make a significant difference in today's world because of the centuries-old vision they follow.

Why not cohabitate? Many believe nothing is better for their future marriage than a trial period—cohabitation. It’s the fastest growing family type in the U.S. So how’s that working out? Are people truly happier? Author Glenn Stanton offers a compelling factual case that nearly every area of health and happiness is increased by marriage and decreased by cohabitation. With credible data and compassion, Stanton explores the reasons why the cohabitation trend is growing; outlines its negative outcomes for men, women, and children; and makes a case for why marriage is still the best arrangement for the flourishing of couples and society. This resource is ideal for those who are cohabitating or considering it, as well as pastors and counselors who need to be able to engage this issue.

Death A Love Project written by Annie Bolitho and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-28 with categories.

Death, a love project is a guide about life and death for those who already understand the importance of end-of-life arrangements, and those with little experience who might wonder about that time. It engages with the complexity and richness of understandings and feelings that commonly arise, as well as the practical demands around dying and death. It is not unusual to feel nervous about death and see it as an unwelcome time of crisis, but many people experience it as a time of wonder and transformation. Stories of innovation and change around death and end-of-life rituals now appear frequently in the media, highlighting that the more you know, the more options there are for how to 'do death'. This is a great primer on death literacy, highlighting the importance of taking your time, and topics such as personal values and preferences, rituals, creativity, affordability and environmental sustainability. The book is based on Annie's long experience as a facilitator of arrangements and rituals, a celebrant and educator. It aims to help those who are thinking ahead about their own later life, as well as those who are confronted with a death. Death, a love project is a short, readable, and essential reference for people of all ages, including baby boomers who aren't ready to cross the threshold of a funeral company. Ever since the Egyptians put honey into their tombs there have been rituals to help us with the awesome mystery of death. This little book conveys what we can do as families and communities to have good rituals today.Cedar Anderson, CEO Flow HiveDeath: a love project will help Australians looking for unique and empowering ways to celebrate the legacy of life. Annie Bolitho's book takes the reader on an inspiring journey of caring for each other in community ¿ right up to the last breath.Jessie Williams CEO, The Groundswell Project.
