Studies on Contemporary China This series is edited at the Contemporary China Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, which is currently Britain's leading centre for Chinese studies. They hope to make the series one of the foremost collections of work on twentieth-century China in the world. Thebooks, by scholars worldwide, are selected for the series by an editorial board. They embrace a wide variety of topics, including economic development, politics and ideology, literature and art, and diplomatic international relations. This book is a pioneering study of the origins of the Chinese Communist Party's cultural policy and the development of the Chinese model of cultural modernization. It traces the development of Marxist literary theory in China and its application to the problems of propagandizing a mass audience ofilliterate peasants. The author looks in particular at the transformation of the folk dance and folk play in the Party's base areas during the 1940s. During this period, the CCP launched a series of mass campaigns in the arts designed to bring the benefits of the new culture to the peasantry, and to weld society in the base areas of North China into a cohesive political force. A key feature of these artistic movements was the way in which theParty sought to transform the traditional performing arts. While only partly successful artistically, these developments contributed to the Communists' propaganda victory in the Civil War and paved the way for their nationwide drive for cultural popularization after 1949. This is the first book-length study to investigate these crucial developments in depth. The author marshals an impressive array of contemporary sources and later reminiscences to investigate the link between policy formation and artistic practice.

'Amidst all the chatter about China lies this rock of a book, a magnificent memoir/ history from the very core of modern Chinese society and history. It's a wonderful thing where the essential book and the delightful book are, as in this case, the one thing. Let no one speak of China who has not read The Phoenix Years.' Tom Keneally, author of Australians The Phoenix Years tells the riveting story of China's rise from economic ruin to global giant in the four decades since the country started opening to the world in 1978. This remarkable narrative is informed and illuminated by another one running beneath its surface - the story of the country's emerging artistic avant-garde and the Chinese people's ongoing struggle for freedom of expression. By following the personal stories of nine contemporary Chinese artists, The Phoenix Years shows how China's rise unleashed creativity, thwarted hopes and sparked tensions between the individual and the state that continue to this day. It relates the amazing years of self-discovery and hope in the 1980s, which ended in the disaster of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Following that tragedy comes the story of China's meteoric economic rise, of the opportunities that emerged and the difficult compromises artists and others have to make to be citizens in modern China. Journalist and foreign correspondent Madeleine O'Dea has been an eyewitness for over 30 years to the rise of China, the explosion of its contemporary art and cultural scene, and its citizens' long struggle for free expression. Over that time she has known many of the key players, some of whom are now international art stars. Their stories tell the history of their country. At once a fascinating and accessible account of the birth of modern China and a moving chronicle of decades of courageous political resistance and cultural activism, The Phoenix Years is vital reading for anyone interested in China today.

China has emerged as the next frontier for contemporary art. Chinese artists, such as Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun, Wang Guangyi, and Shen Shaomin, are producing some of today’s most provocative new work. With China set to host the world at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Shanghai World’s Fair, enthusiasm for recent Chinese art continues to grow. This volume fills an important gap and provides badly needed context for the collector or connoisseur. Charles Saatchi, one of the savviest figures in the contemporary art scene, has built an unparalleled collection of new Chinese art which is presented here in glorious color reproduction on the eve of the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in London’s Chelsea. Not only is this the seminal book on the subject, it is the first book to bring contemporary Chinese art into focus.

A History Of Contemporary Chinese Art written by Yan Zhou and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-14 with Art categories.

Chinese art has experienced its most profound metamorphosis since the early 1950s, transforming from humble realism to socialist realism, from revolutionary art to critical realism, then avant-garde movement, and globalized Chinese art. With a hybrid mix of Chinese philosophy, imported but revised Marxist ideology, and western humanities, Chinese artists have created an alternative approach – after a great ideological and aesthetic transition in the 1980s – toward its own contemporaneity though interacting and intertwining with the art of rest of the world. This book will investigate, from the perspective of an activist, critic, and historian who grew up prior to and participated in the great transition, and then researched and taught the subject, the evolution of Chinese art in modern and contemporary times. The volume will be a comprehensive and insightful history of the one of the most sophisticated and unparalleled artistic and cultural phenomena in the modern world.
