This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ...fact, our eye has rested upon a very pleasant paragraph in the San Francisco Exchange of October 14, 1882, which we present, as follows: "We are justly proud of our duck grounds. A good shot on a favorable ground with a strong breeze can pile the dead about him until his arms grow weary of the slaughter. Nor has he far to go for his sport. The seventeen-mile marsh and along the east side of the bay towards Alviso is open to all comers. At Benicia, running up towards the Cordelia slough, the shooting is admirable. The country about Suisun, from Bridgeport on the north to Suisun, is probably an area of from seven to ten thousand acres which, by the end of October, is swarming with duck. On either side, extending from Suisun Bay to what is known as the islands, is a grand canvas-back country, intersected with small creeks. Hence up to the San Joaquin to all the landings, and notably Andrus Island, Sherman Island and Well's Landing, wild duck are found in myriads. Of course the chief of all is the canvas-back. Then comes, the mallard, pintail, and blue-winged teal. A favorite way of cooking the canvas-back is in what is termed Baltimore fashion. The bird is stuffed with celery, placed in the oven for nineteen minutes--the epicures persisting that a single minute more would spoil the flavor--and then served with red pepper, lime and hominy--a dish fit for the table of a prince. It is the bird of all birds, and the dun bird of Europe alone approaches it in richness and delicacy of flavor. The principal manner of duck shooting, at least during the early part of the season, is shooting in ponds over a decoy. The hunter in his boat enters one of these ponds before daylight, and the rule is, no matter if the birds lie before him in tens of...

Wherever you are, summer is a time to savor longer days and lazy weekends. Fresh produce abounds, and life moves at a more relaxed pace. Anna Pump, proprietor of the iconic Loaves & Fishes store on Long Island, has catered to a devoted clientele of Hamptons weekenders for more than twenty-five years and understands summer's rhythms. She knows that while you may want to enjoy a picnic on the beach or a late supper on the porch, you don't want to spend the entire day in the kitchen, painstakingly preparing elaborate dishes. In Summer on a Plate she shares more than 120 recipes for delicious, no-fuss, memorable meals that celebrate the bounty of summer. Anna never confuses simple with ordinary. A distinctive first course of Avocado Mousse and Shrimp on Tortilla Chips comes together in a flash. Chilled Tomato and Cucumber Soup with Seasoned Croutons makes a light and refreshing midday meal, and Spicy Corn Fritters with Salmon Caviar Dip are just the thing to set out for your weekend guests when a sunny Saturday on the beach turns into breezy evening on the deck. Many dishes can go straight from the grill to the table, like Grilled Tenderloin of Beef with Fresh Herb Sauce or Perfect Whole Grilled Chicken with Plum Chutney. In the mood for seafood? Halibut Baked with Olives, Lemons, and Fresh Basil is a snap to prepare and full of fresh flavors. And what would summer be without salads? Serve Black Mission Figs with Goat Cheese and Upland Cress to begin a dinner party, while the Magret of Duck and Wild Rice Salad or the Asian-Flavor Beef, Pepper, and Spinach Salad are meals in themselves. If your favorite part of the meal is dessert (like Anna!) you won't be disappointed. Chocolate Chunk Orange Cake is a sweet ending to any meal (or even a sweet breakfast) and is just as satisfying with a cup of midafternoon coffee. Rhubarb Blueberry Pie or a Peach Tart with Almond Topping and a Cookie Crust take advantage of the best of summer fruits. The Coconut Lemon Layer Cake is a showstopper, or you can opt for a simple dish of dead-ripe berries lavished with a dollop of Crème Fraîche. Put summer on your plate and enjoy everything the season has to offer.

Described by Richard William of The Guardian as 'the best sports book of 2013, and the best sports book of all time', The Boys of Summer is the story of the young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the Brooklyn Dodgers team that broke the colour barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a book by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for The Herald Tribune. A story about what happened to Jackie, Carl Erskine, Pee Wee Reese, and the others when the glory days were behind them, it is also a book about fathers and sons and the making of modern America.
