This new translation brings to English-speaking readers an intense and brooding work by the greatest poet of the Italian Renaissance, Ludovico Ariosto. Begun as a sequel to his epic masterpiece Orlando Furioso (1516), the unfinished Cinque Canti are a powerful poem in their own right. Tragic in tone, they depict the disintegration of the chivalric world of Charlemagne and his knights and give poetic expression to a sense of cultural, political, and religious crisis felt in Ariosto's Italy and in early sixteenth-century Europe more generally. David Quint's introduction freshly examines the literary sources and models of the Cinque Canti and discusses the cultural contexts and historical occasions of the poem. Printed with facing Italian text, this volume allows the modern reader to experience a work of Renaissance literature whose savage beauty still has the power to chill and fascinate.

"The "Cinque Canti" represent an extremely critical period of Italian and European history. This translation is an outstanding achievement. . . . It aims for close fidelity to the original Italian and is highly readable, even elegant."--Albert R. Ascoli, author of "Ariosto's Bitter Harmony"

The Italian romance epic of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with its multitude of characters, complex plots, and roots in medieval Carolingian epic and Arthurian chivalric romance, was a form popular with courtly and urban audiences. In the hands of writers such as Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso, works of remarkable sophistication that combined high seriousness and low comedy were created. Their works went on to influence Cervantes, Milton, Ronsard, Shakespeare, and Spenser. In this volume instructors will find ideas for teaching the Italian Renaissance romance epic along with its adaptations in film, theater, visual art, and music. An extensive resources section locates primary texts online and lists critical studies, anthologies, and reference works.

Perspectives On Early Modern And Modern Intellectual History written by Joseph Marino and has been published by University Rochester Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.
Perspectives on Early and Modern Intellectual History brings together several disciplines and historical periods, and three generations of scholars to celebrate the pedagogical and scholarly career of Nancy Struever, who taught in the Humanities Center and Department of History at The John Hopkins University. Twenty-three essays reflect the breadth of disciplinary competence and the standards of scholarly rigor that Stuever instilled in her students and demonstrates in her scholarship. The book is organized around three divisional areas of inquiry: Renaissance Humanism, Histories of Art, and Rhetorics, Philosophies, and Histories. The first part includes studies on Shakespeare and Ariosto; essays on Machiavelli, Caterina da Siena, and Lorenzo Valla; and Manetti on the library of Nicholas V. The section on histories of art contains contributions on L.B. Alberti, on early modern spectacle and the performance of images, and on rhetoric and art. The third section continues with discussions of rhetoric, history, and literature from a more theoretical viewpoint. The book concludes with a bibliography of Stuever's works. Authors include: Marvin Becker, Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle, Salvatore Camporeale, F. Edward Cranz, Elizabeth Cropper, Marc Fumaroli, Thomas M. Greene, Michael Ann Holly, J. G. A. Pocock, Charles Trinkaus, and Hayden White. Joseph Marino is an independent scholar and is with Current Analysis in Virginia. Melinda Schlitt is Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts, Dickinson College.
