part two of the Shadowed Days Mid-50s to mid-60s Melbourne—a Wowserland of 6 o'clock closing, censorship, endless suburbia …... we could settle down. But that was the farthest thing from our minds. We didn’t want security, we wanted adventure, risk, experience, we wanted to see and grasp the world ... In Fare Thee Well, Hoddle Grid, Garry Kinnane continues the story, begun in Shadowed Days, of a young man looking for his direction in life. Having left school early, Garry finds himself at twenty-one in danger of working forever as an insurance clerk in the city. But gradually he finds an escape route—through night classes in literature, the folk-revival, The Push, the attractions of a Bohemian life …GARRY KINNANE is the author of George Johnston: A Biography (winner of The Age Book of the Year 1986), and Colin Colahan: A Portrait. His memoir Shadowed Days was shortlisted in the 2009 Queensland Premiers Literary Awards for non-fiction. About the AuthorGarry Kinnane was raised in a working class family in Melbourne during the1940s and 50s, worked at a variety of jobs in his teens, and gained recognition as a folk musician in the early1960s. In 1964 he married and travelled abroad, living first in Greece, then in England for ten years. There he undertook a degree in literary studies at the University of Warwick, from where he won a postgraduate scholarship to the University of Oxford. He returned to teach literary studies at Monash, the University of Ballarat and Melbourne University, from where he retired in 2004. Garry is currently writing a sequence of memoirs, the first of which, Shadowed Days; Fragments of a Melbourne Boyhood was released in 2008.Fare Thee Well, Hoddle Grid is the second volume, and a third is planned. Garry is also writing fiction, and teaching a U3A literature class in Geelong, where he now lives with his wife Jo.*Reviews of Shadowed Days:‘Shadowed Days glows with humanity, with an understanding and wisdom born of privation and endurance.’ —Tom Petsinis, author of The French Mathematician ‘A beautifully written evocation of a childhood during the post-war years in Victoria ... Honorable Mention Recipient for the Comics Studies Society Prize for Edited Book Collection Contributions by Joshua T. Anderson, Chad A. Barbour, Susan Bernardin, Mike Borkent, Jeremy M. Carnes, Philip Cass, Jordan Clapper, James J. Donahue, Dennin Ellis, Jessica Fontaine, Jonathan Ford, Lee Francis IV, Enrique García, Javier García Liendo, Brenna Clarke Gray, Brian Montes, Arij Ouweneel, Kevin Patrick, Candida Rifkind, Jessica Rutherford, and Jorge Santos Cultural works by and about Indigenous identities, histories, and experiences circulate far and wide. However, not all films, animation, television shows, and comic books lead to a nuanced understanding of Indigenous realities. Acclaimed comics scholar Frederick Luis Aldama shines light on how mainstream comics have clumsily distilled and reconstructed Indigenous identities and experiences. He and contributors emphasize how Indigenous comic artists are themselves clearing new visual-verbal narrative spaces for articulating more complex histories, cultures, experiences, and narratives of self. To that end, Aldama brings together scholarship that explores both the representation and misrepresentation of Indigenous subjects and experiences as well as research that analyzes and highlights the extraordinary work of Indigenous comic artists. Among others, the book examines Daniel Parada’s Zotz, Puerto Rican comics Turey el Taíno and La Borinqueña, and Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection. This volume’s wide-armed embrace of comics by and about Indigenous peoples of the Americas and Australasia is a first step to understanding how the histories of colonial and imperial domination connect the violent wounds that still haunt across continents. Aldama and contributors resound this message: Indigeneity in comics is an important, powerful force within our visual-verbal narrative arts writ large.

Before Superman, before Batman, there was—the Phantom! Making its debut as an American newspaper comic strip in 1936, The Phantom was the forerunner of the comic-book superhero genre that today animates vast billion-dollar franchises spanning print, film, television, video games, and licensed merchandise. But you’ve probably never heard of it—you probably think Superman inaugurated the genre. That’s because, despite its American origins, The Phantom comic strip has enjoyed far greater popularity with international audiences, most notably in Australia, Sweden, and India, where it has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and comic books. The paradox of the character’s relative obscurity in the United States, offset by his phenomenal success in these three markedly different countries, is the subject of The Phantom Unmasked. By tracing the publication history of The Phantom in magazines and comic books across international markets since the mid-1930s, author Kevin Patrick delves into the largely unexplored prehistory of modern media licensing industries. He also explores the interconnections between the cultural, political, economic, and historical factors that fueled the character’s international popularity. The Phantom Unmasked offers readers a nuanced study of the complex cultural flow of American comic books around the world. Equally important, to provide a rare glimpse of international comics fandom, Patrick surveyed the Phantom’s “phans”—as they call themselves—and lets them explain how and why they came to love the world’s first masked superhero.

Transport For Suburbia written by Paul Mees and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-01 with Nature categories.

The need for effective public transport is greater than ever in the 21st century. With countries like China and India moving towards mass-automobility, we face the prospects of an environmental and urban health disaster unless alternatives are found. It is time to move beyond the automobile age. But while public transport has worked well in the dense cores of some big cities, the problem is that most residents of developed countries now live in dispersed suburbs and smaller cities and towns. These places usually have little or no public transport, and most transport commentators have given up on the task of changing this: it all seems too hard. This book argues that the secret of 'European-style' public transport lies in a generalizable model of network planning that has worked in places as diverse as rural Switzerland, the Brazilian city of Curitiba and the Canadian cities of Toronto and Vancouver. It shows how this model can be adapted to suburban, exurban and even rural areas to provide a genuine alternative to the car, and outlines the governance, funding and service planning policies that underpin the success of the world's best public transport systems.
