"The time for Scandinavian clothing has come because the elements present in the designers' collections are highly in tune with the way we live and work today."—Dorothea Gundtoft Scandinavian furniture and architecture have long held sway in the global design sphere, and Scandinavian fashion is now gaining the same influence. The appeal lies in the simplicity, minimalism, attention to detail, and high quality of materials so iconic to Scandinavian design, as well as a commitment to sustainable and ethical production methods. Heralding a new movement in fashion, this book features over fifty notable designers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland. These include well-established designers at brands such as Acne, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, and Marimekko, as well as up-and-coming labels such as Ann-Sofie Back, Peter Jensen, and Soulland. From the sharp tailoring of COS and the gothic creations of Camilla Stark to the understated collections by the Icelandic sisters behind the Kalda label, all demonstrate a dedication to wearable fashion and a cool and refined style. Interviews with the designers cover training, sources of inspiration, and manufacturing methods.

Fashioned In The North written by Anna Dahlgren and has been published by Nordic Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-16 with Photography categories.

Fashioned in the North showcases stories of images, photographers, publications and institutions that have attracted minimal attention outside the local Nordic academic community. The authors of the book examine the reasons for, and implications of this underexposure – to use a photographic metaphor. The domain of fashion photography studies is widened here and the texts challenge often taken for granted ideas of centre and periphery in the discipline. The hybridity of this approach adds new nuances that enrich the knowledge in the field. The contributors discuss fashion photography as a trans national phenomenon, a material object, as medium and part of a media system, and as the result of archival systems and history writings. They show how in depth studies of this kind can offer so much more than focusing on but a few agents, iconic images, individual or periodic style. Indeed, case studies like these serve as a prism through which we can reveal cultural, social, economic and ideological aspects of society as these are reflected in fashion photography.

Dressing With Purpose written by Carrie Hertz and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-21 with Art categories.

Dress helps us fashion identity, history, community, and place. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability, the exotic and the utopian, oppression and freedom, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt, Norwegian bunad, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. By the 20th century, many in Sweden worried about the ravages of industrialization, urbanization, and emigration on traditional ways of life. Norway was gripped in a struggle for national independence. Indigenous Sámi communities—artificially divided by national borders and long resisting colonial control—rose up in protests that demanded political recognition and sparked cultural renewal. Within this context of European nation-building, colonial expansion, and Indigenous activism, traditional dress took on special meaning as folk, national, or ethnic minority costumes—complex categories that deserve reexamination today. Through lavishly illustrated and richly detailed case studies, Dressing with Purpose introduces readers to individuals who adapt and revitalize dress traditions to articulate who they are, proclaim personal values and group allegiances, strive for sartorial excellence, reflect critically on the past, and ultimately, reshape the societies they live in.

At the heart of this anthology lies the world of fashion: a concept that pervades the realm of clothes and dress; appearances and fashionable manners; interior design; ideas and attitudes. Here sixteen papers focus on the Nordic world (Denmark, Norway, Sweden Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Isles and Greenland) within the time frame AD 1500Ð1850. This was a period of rapid and far-reaching social, political and economic change, from feudal Europe through political revolution, industrialisation, development of international trade, religious upheaval and technological innovation; changes impacting on every aspect of life and reflected in equally rapid and widespread changes in fashion at all levels of society. These papers present a broad image of the theme of fashion as a concept and as an empirical manifestation in the Nordic countries in early modernity, exploring a variety of ways in which that world encountered fashionable impressions in clothing and related aspects of material culture from Europe, the Russian Empire, and far beyond. The chapters range from object-based studies to theory-driven analysis. Elite and sophisticated fashions, the importation of luxuries and fashion garments, christening and bridal wear, silk knitted waistcoats, woollen sweaters and the influence of the whaling trade on womenÕs clothing are some of the diverse topics considered, as well as religious influences on perceptions of luxury and aspects of the garment trade and merchant inventories.

Nordic Fashion Studies written by Peter McNeil and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Clothing and dress categories.

Fashion means much more than dress. There are fashions in all aspects of life, from the time and manner of taking meals to the ways in which people sit. Clothes are animated by bodies moving in space, through gesture and deportment, and attitudes towards work and leisure that have changed dramatically across culture and time. The dressed body occupies space in coded ways that are learned through socialisation and that are also subject to fashion. This anthology explores the multi-dimensions of fashion, from the market to the imagination. Fashion, a series of experts argue, is relational and weighty, yet still figures in the media and popular imagination as nebulous and opaque. This anthology seeks to overturn that popular view, introducing readers to new ways of conceptualising their interest and participation in fashion past and present.
