This book is aimed at helping both newly trained and experienced mental health professionals become comfortable and adept in using hypnosis in their clinical practice. Despite dramatic evidence of the effectiveness of hypnosis and its growing acceptance, only a small percentage of psychotherapists employ their hypnotherapy training in their practices. This under-use of hypnosis is due to exaggerated misconceptions about its power and the resultant performance anxiety therapists experience after their training. This text is designed to address therapist performance anxiety surrounding the use of hypnosis by exploring the myths surrounding its power and therapeutic potential. The integration of a straightforward systematic hypnotic approach into therapeutic practice has value both in assessment and treatment. Using clinical anecdotes and personal experience, the authors of Hypnosis in Clinical Practice explain induction style and trance work in a way that is fundamental and highly accessible.

Hypnosis In Therapy written by H. B. Gibson and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-01 with Psychology categories.

This book covers a comprehensive range of the applications of hypnotic techniques in therapy for psychological disorders, and medical conditions where such techniques are a valuable adjunct. In recent years psychologists, medical doctors, dentists and allied professional workers have come to make increasing use of hypnosis in their work, and there is now a considerable amount of relevant research literature available in journals. Such literature is reviewed, and serves as a practical guide for professionals. The book begins by explaining what is meant by hypnosis today, and traces its historical background. Some fundamental questions such as individual differences in susceptibility to hypnosis are discussed in relation to therapy. Separate chapters are devoted to the key topics of behaviour therapy, different forms of psychotherapy, psychosomatic medicine, the treatment of pain, and applications in medical and surgical procedures. The modern status of hypnotic techniques in obstetrics and in dentistry is reviewed, and a separate chapter on the use of hypnosis with children will be of special interest to educational and clinical psychologists. A final chapter reviews the use of hypnosis by various professions and para-medical disciplines, and discusses the possible abuses that may arise both through unqualified people seeking to practice "hypnotherapy", and by professionals acting outside their proper range of competence.

Hypnotism is widely accepted today at its proper level - as a legitimate field of scientific inquiry and a useful tool of psychotherapy. Its potential has been recognized by the British Medical Society and the American Medical Association; and courses on the subject are appearing in medical schools and in training programs for psychiatrists. Previously, hypnosis had a chequered career over a period of centuries, going through cycle after cycle of general approval and then total eclipse. Can we be sure that hypnosis will retain the general interest it possesses today? The fate of this book indicates how fragile the reputation of hypnosis is; written nearly a century ago, and translated into English nearly eighty years ago, it has always been acknowledged as a great classic; yet it has been out of print nearly seventy-five years. It was not outmoded. It was not suppressed. It has simply been neglected. Its author was fully respected in medical circles; Bernheim conducted his research at one of those moments in medical history when the fact of hypnotic phenomena was accepted by the medical profession. Bernheim saw that the results he produced involved more than the ability to produce the hypnotic trance; he saw his relation to the patient as a "special relationship." In spontaneous sleep, the sleeper is in relation to himself alone, although he proceeds to hallucinate - to dream. In the "induced sleep" of hypnotism, however, the subject retains the memory of the person who has influenced him to "sleep," and this is the source of the hypnotist's unique power over him. This rapport between hypnotist and patient is the key; Bernheim describes cases in which this rapport does not occur - and therefore there is no therapeutic effect.

Hypnosis: Advanced Techniques of Hypnotherapy and Hypnoanalysis. Analytical Hypno-psychotherapy gains its strength from the fact that it is more flexible and more interactive than straightforward hypnoanalysis. We can work with a wider variety of psychological conditions and can even achieve positive results when working with the logical and analytical client. It is more interactive than hypnoanalysis, more flexible than 'direct regression' and allows the skilled worker enormous access to the individual workings of the client's psyche. We can work with people in their sixties and seventies, logical and analytical clients, individuals who are 'hypnophobic' or 'hypno-incapable', even those who strenuously seek to avoid confrontation with whatever trauma has caused their presenting problem. We can even work with those who have not experienced any trauma but are, in the words of the late C.G. Jung, "Suffering only from the problems of living." Conventional hypnoanalysis often appears to fail - usually because the therapist has not the training to recognise that he or she is using it for the 'wrong' type of symptom or the 'wrong' sort of client, more of which later. Hypnoanalysis is a relatively brief therapy, when taking into account the type of problem for which it is normally employed as a work methodology. The problem is that the oft-quoted 'eight to ten sessions' format is really only applicable when working within certain parameters - and there are many clients and their presenting problems who fall outside these guidelines. The advantage of the work methodology that we are looking at here is that it is far more versatile; its disadvantage is that we are not looking at a truly brief therapy here - we are looking at getting the client better and the timescale is going to vary enormously according to the client personality type and presenting difficulty. In any case, a conscientious therapist should completely ignore the "I can fix that in two sessions, what on earth are you doing?" brigade - therapy should never be a race. It is the emotional health and wellbeing of the client that is important, not the ego of the therapist. If you are looking for the "next level" of hypnotherapy, you have found it here. Experience the journey with Terence Watts.

Why You Should Buy This Book Now, orYou Have to Know Why Things Work on a StarshipIn the middle of a battle with Khan (Ricardo Montalbán, not Benedict Cumberbatch), Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock start fooling around with the command console on the Enterprise. Lt. Saavik does not understand why, and Kirk replies, “You have to learn why things work on a starship.” Kirk has a cool plan to outperform Khan because he knows more about how things work than Khan does (Meyer, 1982).In 1995 the National Institutes of Health issued a report strongly recommending hypnosis to treat chronic pain and insomnia. The report noted that the mechanism for the relief of pain and insomnia was not well understood.Much has changed since 1995. Advances in neurology and neuroimaging brain scans now reveal exactly how suggestive processes and hypnosis function. The brain physiology of hypnosis is well understood. In 1784, French king Louis XVI appointed a royal commission headed by Benjamin Franklin to investigate amazing cures by the flamboyant Franz Anton Mesmer, a man with plenty of style and a frightening, misunderstood power. The commission found that there was no science to what Mesmer was doing, only suggestion. If only Franklin's commission had access to functional magnetic imagery brain scans—they could have seen how the power of suggestion changes not just the mind, but also the brain. The reality is that emotion changes behavior. Stories frame and create our emotions. These changes are not just “mental” or ephemeral; they cause profound physical changes in the brain and profound metaphysical changes in the very meaning of our lives. This book is extensively documented with peer-reviewed empirical studies (just flip back to the References on page 92 and check it out). It provides you with instruction not only on how to perform hypnosis, but on how hypnosis works: This is the scientific data, the “why” that you need to know. Most of our models of change are cognitive. They are about learning new information, and then trying (and often failing) to implement it. Emotional change is different from cognitive approaches, and powerful. You want to be a great hypnotist. You want to know more than just how to perform tricks. You need to know why things work on a Starship. Buy this book, read, learn, enjoy.
