Dr. Richard Carrier is an expert in the history of the ancient world and a critic of Christian attempts to distort history in defense of their faith. Not the Impossible Faith is a tour de force in that genre, dissecting and refuting the oft-repeated claim that Christianity could not have succeeded in the ancient world unless it was true. Though framed as a detailed rebuttal to Christian apologist J.P. Holding (author of The Impossible Faith), Carrier takes a general approach that educates the reader on the history and sociology of the ancient world, answering many questions like: How did Christians approach evidence? Was there a widespread prejudice against the testimony of women? Was resurrection such a radical idea? Who would worship a crucified criminal? And much more. Written with occasional humor and an easy style, and thoroughly referenced, with many entertaining "gotcha!" moments, Not the Impossible Faith is a must-read for anyone interested in the origins of Christianity.

A Thesis So Explosive, An Atheist Paid $5,000 for An Answer The Impossible Faith offers the proposition that Christianity could not have succeeded unless it had indisputable proof of the resurrection of Jesus. Had there not been such evidence, Christianity would have been an "impossible faith". Using his seventeen years of experience in apologetics ministry, the author will demonstrate the impossibility of Christianity in the eyes of the people of the first century and present an apologetic for Jesus' resurrection. Christians will be encouraged and emboldened by the message of The Impossible Faith, realizing "how firm a foundation" they have in Christ Jesus. Non-Christians will be challenged to consider the truth of Christianity in a new light. The arguments in this book are so powerful that one atheist paid over $5,000 for a response. It is impossible to estimate the evangelistic impact that is possible because of The Impossible Faith. James Patrick Holding is President of Tekton Apologetics Ministries, one of the leading apologetics ministries on the Internet. Tekton Apologetics Ministries was recommended by apologist and prominent author Lee Strobel on Hank Hanegraaff's The Bible Answerman in December, 2001. Holding has written over 1700 articles for his ministry, as well as articles for the Christian Research Journal and for the publications of Creation Ministries International . He has also published The Mormon Defenders: How Latter-Day Saint Apologists Misinterpret the Bible. He lives in Central Florida with his beloved wife and a very small, very spoiled poodle.

An inspiring book that was in the course of preparation at the time of Professor Thompson's death. He had long wished to write an interpretation of modern Christianity which would meet the needs of others as it had met those of his own life. His death occurred before he had written the last chapter, which was to have been called "Finis Coronat." He held that the blind theologian, with his useless, dead theological equipment, made orthodox religion impossible to the man of reason and sane judgment. Also that while false gods must be cast out of the Temple, the Temple must not remain empty; the religious teachings of the future must be equal to the growing spiritual needs of humanity. -The Review of Reviews, Vol. 59

This in-depth discussion of New Testament scholarship and the challenges of history as a whole proposes Bayes’s Theorem, which deals with probabilities under conditions of uncertainty, as a solution to the problem of establishing reliable historical criteria. The author demonstrates that valid historical methods—not only in the study of Christian origins but in any historical study—can be described by, and reduced to, the logic of Bayes’s Theorem. Conversely, he argues that any method that cannot be reduced to this theorem is invalid and should be abandoned. Writing with thoroughness and clarity, the author explains Bayes’s Theorem in terms that are easily understandable to professional historians and laypeople alike, employing nothing more than well-known primary school math. He then explores precisely how the theorem can be applied to history and addresses numerous challenges to and criticisms of its use in testing or justifying the conclusions that historians make about the important persons and events of the past. The traditional and established methods of historians are analyzed using the theorem, as well as all the major "historicity criteria" employed in the latest quest to establish the historicity of Jesus. The author demonstrates not only the deficiencies of these approaches but also ways to rehabilitate them using Bayes’s Theorem. Anyone with an interest in historical methods, how historical knowledge can be justified, new applications of Bayes’s Theorem, or the study of the historical Jesus will find this book to be essential reading.

To be safe in life, it is better to have both reason and faith on your side. It does not do good to only major in one at the expense of the other. Reason and science are our best friends; and so is faith in God. In this little treatise, I show you how to extend your level of faith from the reasonable realm into the "other" realm, the place where impossible becomes possible.

Excerpt from A Not Impossible Religion Doubtless many passages would have been modified or altered by him, but it has seemed better to issue these papers substantially as he left them. In a very few cases one or two omissions or alterations have been made, and three chapters are withheld which do not seem necessary to the scheme of the book. It should be added that the various chapters were written, in some cases at an interval of years, in the midst of an exceptionally busy life, crowded with intellectual activity, and burdened with a heavy weight of work for others. In one or two cases they were prepared and delivered as separate addresses. In his intense love of truth and indignation with unreality and insincerity, Dr. Thompson has sometimes written severely of orthodoxy and its exponents. It must not be thought, however, that he did not love and cherish true religion everywhere, even when it found expression in the most orthodox language and way of worship. Two friends amongst those with whom he was accustomed to meet and discuss some of the deepest problems of life and religion, whom he regarded with especial love and veneration, were in the one case a devout Roman Catholic, and in the other an Anglican clergyman. Above all, it must be remembered that this book was not intended for men and women who are content with a creed and a worship which are accepted as orthodox. On The Historicity Of Jesus written by Richard Carrier and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-03 with Religion categories.

The assumption that Jesus existed as a historical person has occasionally been questioned in the course of the last hundred years or so, but any doubts that have been raised have usually been put to rest in favor of imagining a blend of the historical, the mythical and the theological in the surviving records of Jesus. Carrier re-examines the whole question and finds compelling reasons to suspect the more daring assumption is correct. He lays out extensive research on the evidence for Jesus and the origins of Christianity and poses the key questions that must now be answered if the historicity of Jesus is to survive as a dominant paradigm. Carrier contrasts the most credible reconstruction of a historical Jesus with the most credible theory of Christian origins if a historical Jesus did not exist. Such a theory would posit that the Jesus figure was originally conceived of as a celestial being known only through private revelations and hidden messages in scripture; then stories placing this being in earth history were crafted to communicate the claims of the gospel allegorically; such stories eventually came to be believed or promoted in the struggle for control of the Christian churches that survived the tribulations of the first century. Carrier finds the latter theory more credible than has been previously imagined. He explains why it offers a better explanation for all the disparate evidence surviving from the first two centuries of the Christian era. He argues that we need a more careful and robust theory of cultural syncretism between Jewish theology and politics of the second-temple period and the most popular features of pagan religion and philosophy of the time. For anyone intent on defending a historical Jesus, this is the book to challenge.
