This book is a comprehensive philosophical study of the ethics of killing in cases in which the metaphysical and moral status of the individual killed is uncertain or controversial. Among the questionable and marginal in this way are human embryos, foetuses, neonates, animals, anencephalic infants, congenitally and cognitively-impaired human beings, and human beings who have become severely demented or irreversibly comatose. In an attempt to understand the question of moral status in such cases, The Ethics of Killing develops and defends many different accounts of personal identity, the nature of death, and the wrongness of killing. McMahan contends that the morality of killing is deeply complex and that the principles that determine the morality of killing in marginal cases are different from those that govern the killing of persons who are self-conscious and rational. Among the central claims of the book is that killing in marginal cases should be evaluated primarily in terms of the impact it would have on the victim at the time rather than on the ontological value of the victim's life as a whole. What primarily matters, in other words, is how killing the victim would affect what this particular victim is concerned with at the time of his or her death. In the second half of the book, the various foundational claims about identity, death, and killing are brought to bear in a systematic fashion to lead to conclusions that are both novel and plausible about such practical issues as abortion, prenatal injury, infanticide, the killing of animals, the significance of brain-death, the termination of life-support in cases of permanent vegetative state, the use of anencephalic infants as sources of organ- transplantation, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and advance directives in cases involving dementia. When and why is it right to kill? When and why is it wrong? Torbjörn Tännsjö examines three theories on the ethics of killing in this book: deontology, a libertarian moral rights theory, and utilitarianism. The implications of each theory are worked out for different kinds of killing: trolley-cases, murder, capital punishment, suicide, assisted death, abortion, killing in war, and the killing of animals. These implications are confronted with our intuitions in relation to them, and our moral intuitions are examined in turn. Only those intuitions that survive an understanding of how we have come to hold them are seen as 'considered' intuitions. The idea is that the theory that can best explain the content of our considered intuitions gains inductive support from them. We must transcend our narrow cultural horizons and avoid certain cognitive mistakes in order to hold considered intuitions. Just what is a human being? Who counts? The answers to these questions are crucial when one is faced with the ethical issue of taking human life. In this affirmation of the intrinsic personal dignity and inviolability of every human individual, John Kavanaugh, S. J., denies that it can ever be moral to intentionally kill another. Today in every corner of the world men and women are willing to kill others in the name of "realism" and under the guise of race, class, quality of life, sex, property, nationalism, security, or religion. We justify these killings by either excluding certain humans from our definition of personhood or by invoking a greater good or more pressing value. Kavanaugh contends that neither alternative is acceptable. He formulates an ethics that opposes the intentional killing not only of medically "marginal" humans but also of depersonalized or criminalized enemies. Offering a philosophy of the person that embraces the undeveloped, the wounded, and the dying, he proposes ways to recover a personal ethical stance in a global society that increasingly devalues the individual.
