How do you cope with adversity? Is there a better way than resignedly accepting it? Is there a way to cure the seemingly incurable? Is there a way to transform the truly incurable into an advantage? Yes, there is a way! There is a way for you to overcome the adversity in your life—then break your cane! In Break Your Cane: Transforming Life’s Worst Challenges to Overcome Adversity, author Bob West details how difficult circumstances early in life were his best education. To survive early adversity, and even thrive because of it, he developed a philosophy of choosing a harder path for personal excellence and greater service. This harder path included using the taunts and ridicule from others to his advantage, turning disadvantages into advantages, and persisting when all seemed hopeless. Early difficulties prepared him for one of the biggest battles of his life—a 30-year struggle with several different chronic illnesses. Instead of giving up, West chose instead a harder path of researching medications, numerous types of diets, and many other remedies, until he found a cure for his incurable rheumatoid arthritis and other illnesses from which he suffered. He chose a harder path, found a cure, and now he shares his story with you. Inside, you’ll find not only his story, but examples from others who’ve chosen to take the harder path to becoming a better person and to serve others. Instead of simply giving up, they’ve persevered, becoming top athletes, affliction survivors, and leaders in history. They’ve been cured, made fascinating discoveries in science, and helped to create a better world around them. Let West and these examples of outstanding individuals inspire you to overcome your next challenge, whether it be medical, personal, educational, or goal-oriented. Choose the harder path to overcome adversity. Choose to overcome it for your own personal excellence and greater service.

Feed Forward written by Mark B. N. Hansen and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-12 with Philosophy categories.

Even as media in myriad forms increasingly saturate our lives, we nonetheless tend to describe our relationship to it in terms from the twentieth century: we are consumers of media, choosing to engage with it. In Feed-Forward, Mark B. N. Hansen shows just how outmoded that way of thinking is: media is no longer separate from us but has become an inescapable part of our very experience of the world. Drawing on the speculative empiricism of philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, Hansen reveals how new media call into play elements of sensibility that greatly affect human selfhood without in any way belonging to the human. From social media to data-mining to new sensor technologies, media in the twenty-first century work largely outside the realm of perceptual consciousness, yet at the same time inflect our every sensation. Understanding that paradox, Hansen shows, offers us a chance to put forward a radically new vision of human becoming, one that enables us to reground the human in a non-anthropocentric view of the world and our experience in it.

The Lost Second Book Of Aristotle S Poetics written by Walter Watson and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

Of all the writings on theory and aesthetics—ancient, medieval, or modern—the most important is indisputably Aristotle’s Poetics, the first philosophical treatise to propound a theory of literature. In the Poetics, Aristotle writes that he will speak of comedy—but there is no further mention of comedy. Aristotle writes also that he will address catharsis and an analysis of what is funny. But he does not actually address any of those ideas. The surviving Poetics is incomplete. Until today. Here, Walter Watson offers a new interpretation of the lost second book of Aristotle's Poetics. Based on Richard Janko’s philological reconstruction of the epitome, a summary first recovered in 1839 and hotly contested thereafter, Watson mounts a compelling philosophical argument that places the statements of this summary of the Aristotelian text in their true context. Watson renders lucid and complete explanations of Aristotle’s ideas about catharsis, comedy, and a summary account of the different types of poetry, ideas that influenced not only Cicero’s theory of the ridiculous, but also Freud’s theory of jokes, humor, and the comic. Finally, more than two millennia after it was first written, and after five hundred years of scrutiny, Aristotle’s Poetics is more complete than ever before. Here, at last, Aristotle’s lost second book is found again.

Peter Oakes combines archaeology and biblical studies to give the reader a fresher, deeper understanding of Paul's letter to the Romans. An investigation of the archaeological evidence from Pompeii helps us to think about the ways in which Paul's letter may have been understood by different people -- such as a slave girl, a cabinet-maker-cum-surgeon and an educated slave concubine -- might have understood Paul's letter when they first heard it.

Digital Tradition written by Eliot Bates and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Music categories.

Istanbul is home to a multimillion dollar transnational music industry, which every year produces thousands of digital music recordings, including widely distributed film and television show soundtracks. Today, this centralized industry is responding to a growing global demand for Turkish, Kurdish, and other Anatolian ethnic language productions, and every year, many of its top-selling records incorporate elaborately orchestrated arrangements of rural folksongs. What accounts for the continuing demand for traditional music in local and diasporic markets? How is tradition produced in twenty-first century digital recording studios, and is there a digital aesthetics to contemporary recordings of traditional music? In Digital Traditions: Arrangement and Labor in Istanbul's Recording Studio Culture, author Eliot Bates answers these questions and more with a case study into the contemporary practices of recording traditional music in Istanbul. Bates provides an ethnography of Turkish recording studios, of arrangers and engineers, studio musicianship and digital audio workstation kinesthetics. Digital Traditions investigates the moments when tradition is arranged, and how arrangement is simultaneously a set of technological capabilities, limitations and choices: a form of musical practice that desocializes the ensemble and generates an extended network of social relations, resulting in aesthetic art objects that come to be associated with a range of affective and symbolic meanings. Rich with visual analysis and drawing on Science & Technology Studies theories and methods, Digital Traditions sets a new standard for the study of recorded music. Scholars and general readers of ethnomusicology, Middle Eastern studies, folklore and science and technology studies are sure to find Digital Traditions an essential addition to their library.

The Lost Secret Of Death written by Peter Novak and has been published by Hampton Roads Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-01 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Novak investigates a belief called the Binary Soul Doctrine (BSD) which states simply that humans possess two souls which split at death, the conscious going on to reincarnate again and again, while the unconscious ends up in a type of limbo judging itself for all eternity. He goes on to explain that long ago the BSD was the primary belief of a single world religion, which since has been broken into more and more fragments. However, he claims that twentieth-century findings, including the work of Freud and Jung, as well as findings of modern neuroscience and Near-Death research, has marked a resurgence of belief in the veracity of the BSD. Novak argues--just as those long ago did--that it is essential for humans to integrate these two souls together before death to avoid the nightmare of being split in two at death. He even offers a few steps to help readers start the process of integration.
