Venezuela, uno de los doce países más ricos en diversidad biológica del mundo1, es también muy rico en minerales, y está sufriendo, sin duda, la peor crisis ambiental del hemisferio occidental, con el mayor número proporcional de minas ilegales y una de las tasas de deforestación más alta de las Américas y la Amazonia. Esto se explica en parte por el colapso progresivo y ahora definitivo de una economía basada en el extractivismo petrolero lo cual ahora empuja al régimen de Maduro a acelerar la explotación desenfrenada del oro al sur del río Orinoco. A partir de su experiencia, SOSOrinoco se ha propuesto profundizar en el análisis de la situación de la minería, específicamente en el llamado Arco Minero del Orinoco. Esto se ha abordado mapeando sus huellas físicas y haciendo seguimiento a las situaciones sociales. Al analizarlas, espacialmente, se hace posible comprender el impacto de la política minera del régimen, que luego nos permitirán proponer lineamientos para soluciones que eventualmente mitiguen sus daños y ayuden a la reconstrucción de Venezuela.
