Three Jews, Alfred Dreyfus, Mendel Beilis, and Leo Frank, were charged with heinous crimes in the generation before World War I, Dreyfus of treason in France, Beilis of ritual murder in Russia, and Frank of the murder of a young girl in the United States. Quite aside from the lurid details and sensational charges, larger issues emerged, among them the power of modern anti-Semitism, the sometimes tragic conflict between the freedom of the press and the protection of individual rights, the unpredictable reactions of individuals when subjected to extreme situations, and the inevitable ambiguities of campaigns for truth and justice when political advantage is to be gained from them. In attempting to untangle myth and reality many surprises emerge; heroes appear less heroic and villains less villainous, while real factors appear more important than most accounts of the affairs have recognised.

Why Do People Discriminate Against Jews written by Jonathan Fox and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-17 with Political Science categories.

A novel analysis that combines traditional theories on anti-Semitism with evidence from 76 nations to explain the determinants that drive discrimination against Jews. Why Do People Discriminate against Jews? provides a data-rich analysis of the causes of discrimination against Jews across the globe. Using the tools of comparative political science, Jonathan Fox and Lev Topor examine the causes of both government-based and societal discrimination against Jews in 76 countries. As they stress, anti-Semitism is an attitude, but discrimination is an action. In examining anti-Jewish discrimination, they combine ideas and theories from classic studies of anti-Semitism with social science theories on the causes of discrimination. On the one hand, conspiracy theories, a major topic in the anti-Semitism literature, are relatively unexplored in the social science literature as a potential instigator of discrimination. On the other, social science theories developed to explain how governments justify discrimination against Muslims are rarely formally applied to the processes that lead to discrimination against Jews. Fox and Topor conclude by identifying three potential causes of discrimination: religious causes, anti-Zionism, and belief in conspiracy theories about Jewish power and world domination. They conclude that while all three influence discrimination against Jews, belief in conspiracy theories is the strongest determinant. The most rigorous and geographically wide-ranging analysis of discrimination against Jews to date, this book reshapes our understanding of the persecution of religious minorities in general and the Jewish people in particular.

Violence Memory And History written by Colin McCullough and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-15 with History categories.

This edited collection delves into the horrors of November 1938 and to what degree they portended the Holocaust, demonstrating the varied reactions of Western audiences to news about the pogrom against the Jews. A pattern of stubborn governmental refusal to help German Jews to any large degree emerges throughout the book. Much of this was in response to uncertain domestic economic conditions and underlying racist attitudes towards Jews. Contrasting this was the outrage expressed by ordinary people around the world who condemned the German violence and challenged the policy of Appeasement being advanced by Great Britain and France towards Adolf Hitler’s Nazi German government at the time. Contributors employ multiple media sources to make their arguments, and compare these with official government records. For the first time, a collection on Kristallnacht has taken a truly transnational approach, giving readers a fuller understanding of how the events of November 1938 were understood around the Western world.

Examines the origins of the deicide accusation, the claim that the Jews killed Jesus, which has always been the main antisemitic cliché. Although St. Paul, who made the sacrifice of God's son a centerpoint of the new religion, can be regarded as the inventor of Christian antisemitism, he did not level the accusation of deicide against the Jews. Argues that it was the authors of the Synoptic Gospels, who wanted both to placate the Roman rulers by diverting the guilt from them and to dissociate themselves from Jewish nationalism after 70 CE, who accused the Jews. The image of Abraham's sacrifice always lurked behind the Crucifixion in Christian theology; Isaac was regarded as a spiritual ancestor of Christians. Abraham's sacrifice which was thwarted by God posed a theological problem for Christianity: if God prohibited the sacrifice of children, how could He sacrifice His own son? The problem was solved by diverting the accusation of infanticide from God to His people. In the Middle Ages, the notion that the Jews were capable of killing children was transformed into the belief in ritual murder. Scenarios of many blood libels included crucifixion of the victim. In the views of that epoch, the Jews needed to consume Christian blood because it was their only substitute for the Eucharist, essential for salvation. The image of the Jew as a ritual murderer, and at the same time the devil's henchman and a traitorous Judas, was adopted by classical English literature, the most striking example of which is Shakespeare's Shylock.
