In an attempt to discover the one-idea with respect to which Goethe claimed he had worked while writing Die Wahlverwandtschaften, taking my cue from Goethe himself, I have united the investigational techniques of hermeneutics and complexity or chaos theory and brought them to bear on the structure of several of the mirroring events in the text. The overwhelming conclusion of this author is that, like those investigating chaos in nature, literary theorists must turn to comprehensive approaches if they wish to treat seriously the structure of texts as works which flow from nature: the nature of the human mind.

In this book, Professor Simuț shows how Christian theology started to be understood as a Gnostic philosophy of religion in the thought of the 19th-century scholar F. C. Baur. Although Baur was seen traditionally as a theologian and biblical exegete, Simuț argues that he was in fact a philosopher of religion, and it was his philosophical reading of Christian theology that informed his biblical preoccupations. Specifically, Baur’s perspective on Christian theology was heavily influenced by Jakob Böhme’s esoteric theosophy and Hegel’s religious philosophy in some key issues such as creation, Lucifer, dualism and the connection between spirit and matter coupled with that between philosophy and religion.

This book is about intersections among science, philosophy, and literature. It bridges the gap between the traditional “cultures” of science and the humanities by constituting an area of interaction that some have called a “third culture.” By asking questions about three disciplines rather than about just two, as is customary in research, this inquiry breaks new ground and resists easy categorization. It seeks to answer the following questions: What impact has the remapping of reality in scientific terms since the Copernican Revolution through thermodynamics, relativity theory, and quantum mechanics had on the way writers and thinkers conceptualized the place of human culture within the total economy of existence? What influence, on the other hand, have writers and philosophers had on the doing of science and on scientific paradigms of the world? Thirdly, where does humankind fit into the total picture with its uniquely moral nature? In other words, rather than privileging one discipline over another, this study seeks to uncover a common ground for science, ethics, and literary creativity. Throughout this inquiry certain nodal points emerge to bond the argument cogently together and create new meaning. These anchor points are the notion of movement inherent in all forms of existence, the changing concepts of evil in the altered spaces of reality, and the creative impulse critical to the literary work of art as well as to the expanding universe. This ambitious undertaking is unified through its use of phenomena typical of chaos and complexity theory as so many leitmotifs. While they first emerged to explain natural phenomena at the quantum and cosmic levels, chaos and complexity are equally apt for explaining moral and aesthetic events. Hence, the title “Remapping Reality” extends to the reconfigurations of the three main spheres of human interaction: the physical, the ethical, and the aesthetic or creative.

Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts entwickeln die Wissenschaften ein Interesse am Lebendigen, das sich nicht zuletzt in neuen Formen des Wissens und wissenschaftlicher Texte artikuliert. Im Anschluss an Kants Ausführungen zur philosophischen und ästhetischen (Nicht-)Darstellbarkeit des Lebendigen verfolgt Michael Bies am Beispiel von Goethes Studien zur Pflanzenmetamorphose und Alexander von Humboldts Arbeiten zur Pflanzengeographie und Pflanzenphysiognomik, wie diese Untersuchungen jeweils bildlich orientierte Präsentationsformen entwickeln. Stärker als auf gesetzmäßige Erklärungen zielen diese Präsentationsformen auf eine Nachbildung von Natur, sie stellen insofern weniger ein begrifflich und kausal begründetes Wissen als vielmehr ein ästhetisches Wissen von der vegetabilen Natur bereit. Darüber hinaus zeigt Bies, dass diese Nähe von Epistemologie und Ästhetik auch konzeptuell fundiert werden kann. Hierzu wird auf den Begriff der "Darstellung" zurückgegriffen, den vor allem Klopstock und Kant in die deutschsprachige Dichtungs-, Kunst- und Erkenntnistheorie eingeführt haben. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht die Relektüre kanonisierter Texte, in denen versehrte Körper zur Sprache kommen - von Winckelmann, Lessing, Herder und Goethe bis zu Moritz, Kleist, Günderrode und Arnim. Um die Verbindung zwischen einer Poetik der Verwundung und einer Geschichte gewaltsam geöffneter Körper zu zeigen, werden Literatur und Kunsttheorie mit anderen Diskursen des späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts konfrontiert: mit Schlachtberichten der Befreiungskriege, gerichtsmedizinischen Untersuchungen und populären Reiseführern sowie mit antiken Skulpturen, zeitgenössischen Radierungen, Wachstableaus und anatomischen Modellen. Auf diese Weise werden literaturwissenschaftliche und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven zu einem luziden Beitrag zu aktuellen Debatten in Germanistik, Ästhetiktheorie, Körpergeschichte und Gender Studies verknüpft.
