Vom Redner ist ein grundlegendes Werk der rhetorischen Schriften Marcus Tullius Ciceros, in dem die Voraussetzungen des Rednerberufs, das Wesen der Rhetorik, der Aufbau der Rede, Fragen des Stils und der moralischen und philosophischen Pflichten des Redners erörtert werden. Die Schrift ist in der Form eines fiktiven Dialogs zwischen Lucius Licinius Crassus und Marcus Antonius Orator, Ciceros Lehrern und Vorbildern aufgebaut und datiert auf das Jahr 91 v. Chr., kurz vor Crassus Tod zurück. Cicero hat sie 55 v. Chr. veröffentlicht und seinem Bruder Quintus gewidmet. Sie gilt als ein Meisterwerk Ciceros über das Wesen des Rednerberufs. Das Werk teilt sich in drei Bücher auf: Im ersten Buch bespricht Crassus die Voraussetzungen für den Rednerberuf und gelangt von dort zu einer Darstellung des idealen Redners. Das zweite und dritte Buch beinhalten eine Darstellung der Teile der Redekunst, bevor am Ende in einem Exkurs neben den zuvor besprochenen technischen vor allem moralische und philosophische Qualitäten vom Redner verlangt werden: Er soll Rhetorik und Philosophie beherrschen, nicht nur eine dieser beiden Disziplinen. Cicero (106 v. Chr.- 43 v. Chr.) war ein römischer Politiker, Anwalt, Schriftsteller und Philosoph, der berühmteste Redner Roms und Konsul im Jahr 63 v. Chr. Cicero war einer der vielseitigsten, aber auch wankelmütigsten Köpfe der römischen Antike. Als Schriftsteller war er schon für die Antike stilistisches Vorbild, seine Werke wurden als Muster einer vollendeten, "goldenen" Latinität nachgeahmt.

Im Fokus der Studie steht eine neue Deutung von Rembrandts Nachtwache aus dem Jahre 1642. Zentral ist dabei die Auseinandersetzung des Malers mit der klassizistischen Kunsttheorie von Franciscus Junius. Dessen Werk "De pictura veterum" war 1637 in lateinischer und 1641 in niederländischer Sprache erschienen. So lautet die These, dass Rembrandts Gruppenporträt auf eine Kritik italienisch-klassizistischer Imitatio-Konzepte zielt und zugleich Werke der Antike und der italienischen Hochrenaissance ironisiert. Der Leidener Maler orientiert sich an Raffaels Schule von Athen, um damit implizit die Frage angemessener und unangemessener Nachahmung zu stellen. Die Studie insgesamt will zeigen, wie differenziert Rembrandt mit Vorbildern umzugehen vermag. Steht auch die Nachtwache im Zentrum der Untersuchung, so werden auch andere Gemälde sowie Radierungen und Zeichnungen interpretiert und nach der ironischen Dimension von Rembrandts Kunst im Ganzen gefragt. The focus of Müller’s study is a new interpretation of Rembrandt’s Night Watch from 1642, which highlights the painter’s engagement with the classical art theory of Franciscus Junius. Junius’s treatise, "De pictura veterum", was published in Latin in 1637 and in Dutch in 1641. Ultimately, Müller argues that Rembrandt’s group portrait was designed to present a critique of the Italianate/classical concepts of Imitatio in addition to offering an ironic commentary on artworks of the Antique and High Renaissance periods. The Dutch artist takes Raphael’s School of Athens as a reference point, thereby implicitly posing questions about appropriate and inappropriate forms of imitation. The study as a whole shows how complex and witty Rembrandt’s approach to his models could be. Although the Night Watch occupies a central place in the inquiry, the author also engages with other paintings, etchings and drawings in order to sketch the contours of Rembrandt’s ironic image making.

The portrayal of princes plays a central role in the historical literature of the European Renaissance. The sixteen contributions collected in this volume examine such portrayals in a broad variety of historiographical, biographical, and poetic texts. It emerges clearly that historical portrayals were not essentially bound by generic constraints but instead took the form of res gestae or historiae, discrete or collective biographies, panegyric, mirrors for princes, epic poetry, orations, even commonplace books – whatever the occasion called for. Beyond questions of genre, the chapters focus on narrative strategies and the transformation of ancient, medieval, and contemporary authors, as well as on the influence of political, cultural, intellectual, and social contexts. Four broad thematic foci inform the structure of this book: the virtues ascribed to the prince, the cultural and political pretensions inscribed in literary portraits, the historical and literary models on which these portraits were based, and the method that underlay them. The volume is rounded out by a critical summary that considers the portrayal of princes in humanist historiogrpahy from the point of view of transformation theory.
