Dictionary Of Abbreviations In Medical Sciences written by Rolf Heister and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of various food additives and a food contaminant with a view to concluding as to safety concerns and to preparing specifications for identity and purity. The first part of the report contains a general discussion of the principles governing the toxicological evaluation of and assessment of dietary exposure to food additives. A summary follows of the Committee's evaluations of technical toxicological and dietary exposure data for seven food additives (advantame; glucoamylase from Trichoderma reesei expressed in Trichoderma reesei; glycerol ester of gum rosin; glycerol ester of tall oil rosin; glycerol ester of wood rosin; nisin; and octenyl succinic acid modified gum arabic) and an assessment of dietary exposure to cadmium from cocoa and cocoa products. Specifications for the following food additives were revised: annatto extracts (solvent-extracted bixin and solvent-extracted norbixin); Benzoe tonkinensis; food additives containing aluminium and/or silicon; mineral oil (medium viscosity); modified starches; paprika extract; phosphates (analytical methods for the determination of phosphorus and revision of specifications); 3-phytase from Aspergillus niger expressed in Aspergillus niger; potassium aluminium silicate; and potassium aluminium silicate-based pearlescent pigments. Annexed to the report are tables summarizing the Committee's recommendations for dietary exposures to and toxicological evaluations of the food additives and contaminant considered.

Beiersdorf written by Alfred Reckendrees and has been published by C.H.Beck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-10 with Political Science categories.

Everyone knows NIVEA. But only a few people are familiar with the Hamburg-based Company that created the "crème de la crème" and other successful Brands. The Beiersdorf story began in 1882. The firm lost its international business in two world wars and during the Nazi period it was exposed to anti-Semitic attacks. Beiersdorf had to start from scratch twice, and yet today it is a global player. Here for the first time, Alfred Reckendrees tells the fascinating story based on comprehensive archive material. He describes the economic challenges and political conflicts that the key actors had to overcome, and presents the Company strategies and reorientations, which are closely interwoven with Germany’s multifaceted history. Today, you can find Beiersdorf Brands in every household. They include NIVEA, Hansaplast, 8x4, Eucerin, and La Prairie; also tesa, the adhesives specialist, belongs to Beiersdorf. Until the 1990s, the Company produced medicines and dressings as well. It all started in 1882 with a new plaster developed by pharmacist Paul Beiersdorf. Later, Oscar Troplowitz turned the small factory into a Brand Company with international operations. However, the US business, which generated most of the firm’s profit, was confiscated during the First World War. After the war, Beiersdorf had to build up its international business again from scratch. In 1933, the executive board and shareholders protected the “Jewish” Company against anti-Semitic attacks by means of “self-Aryanization.” Beiersdorf survived the Nazi regime; it could even take advantage of the economic opportunities it offered. After the Second World War, the Company lost its international business for the second time. It was not until 1997 that Beiersdorf regained control of all the trademarks worldwide.

The Moralization Of The Markets written by Nico Stehr and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-31 with Political Science categories.

Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. This volume will be of interest to sociologists, economists, social scientists, and the general consumer alike.
