Biography of a mixed race who became a well known tavern owner in New York City. He volunteered to spy for the Patriots in the American Revolution and lived as a spy in occupied New York, for 5 years, passing information to Washington. He fed and clothed American prisoners of war and helped several escape. He saved Washington's life twice, saving the Revolution at critical points. Washington gave his farewell speech at Fraunces' Tavern and later hired Samuel Fraunces as the first Steward of an American Presidential House. His life story reads like a novel.

[The author] "has been researching the free black living within the boundaries of Pennsylvania before the Civil War ... Many of the nuclear families in Centre County had migrated from Lancaster County Pennsylvania. These free black families intermarried and settled throughout Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Canada. These nuclear families brought to light Samuel Fraunces [who] lived in Philadelphia [and] was steward for the Washington's household in Philadelphia ... Fraunces' family like all of these families has been enumerated in census records as white, black, Negro Caucasian, and Mulatto. There are those who would erase Fraunces' African origins in his biography because he seems to have "passed for white". Not all of Samuel Fraunces' children, grandchildren or continuing descendants passed for white. Many of the descendants do not want Samuel's African origins erased from his biography. While future generations may be able to sort things out even further with DNA testing of allied lines there is a need to mark what records are available."--Page 4 of cover.

The history and terror of black slavery has been well documented in literature and film. Lawrence Hill’s new book doesn’t lessen the awfulness of the times, but adds a unique human dimension. Hill has created an uplifting and highly educational story about a shameful part of history. The Book of Negroes is sold in the United States under the title, Someone Knows My Name. Aminata Diallo was born free in Africa in the eighteenth century. She had a rich and lovely childhood until the day she was captured by slave traders and marched off to the coast in chains. Along with thousands of others, Aminata was destined for North America as a slave to white owners. She was eleven years old. Hill tracks Aminata’s story through the circle of her life. Every Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion guide includes complete coverage of the themes and symbols, writing style, and interesting background information on the novel and the author.

America has gone Hamilton crazy. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical has spawned sold-out performances, a triple platinum cast album, and a score so catchy that it is being used to teach U.S. history in classrooms across the country. But just how historically accurate is Hamilton? And how is the show itself making history? Historians on Hamilton brings together a collection of top scholars to explain the Hamilton phenomenon and explore what it might mean for our understanding of America’s history. The contributors examine what the musical got right, what it got wrong, and why it matters. Does Hamilton’s hip-hop take on the Founding Fathers misrepresent our nation’s past, or does it offer a bold positive vision for our nation’s future? Can a musical so unabashedly contemporary and deliberately anachronistic still communicate historical truths about American culture and politics? And is Hamilton as revolutionary as its creators and many commentators claim? Perfect for students, teachers, theatre fans, hip-hop heads, and history buffs alike, these short and lively essays examine why Hamilton became an Obama-era sensation and consider its continued relevance in the age of Trump. Whether you are a fan or a skeptic, you will come away from this collection with a new appreciation for the meaning and importance of the Hamilton phenomenon.
