Elle fut représentée pour la première fois à la Comédie-Française en décembre 1730, mais Voltaire en a composé au moins le premier acte lors de son séjour en Angleterre, marqué par la découverte de Shakespeare. Voltaire goûte la dimension politique de la tragédie mais aussi les déchirements d'un fils qui aime la fille de l'ennemi de son père et de sa patrie, et d'un père qui n'a d'autre choix que de condamner son fils à mort.
