Aber das gefällt mir eben an ihr, daß sie nichts von ihrem Wesen aufgibt, und bleibt, wie sie war.“ Dieses von Goethe stammende Zitat beschreibt recht gut den Eindruck, den man von Christiane Vulpius in dem Film „Die Braut“ bekommt. Sie ist die Hauptfigur im Film von Egon Günther, der Regie geführt und Drehbuch anlässlich des 250. Geburtstags Goethes geschrieben hat. Christiane Vulpius wird von Veronica Ferres und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe von Herbert Knaup gespielt. Die Rolle der Charlotte von Stein vertritt Sybille Canonica. Zudem treten Christoph Waltz (als Herzog Karl August), Franziska Herold (als Charlotte von Lengefeld-Schiller), Friedrich Wilhelm Junge (als Wieland) und Rüdiger Vogler (als Meyer) auf. Gezeigt werden die 28 Jahre, die Goethe mit Christiane Vulpius verbracht hat. Zentrale Fragestellung dieser Arbeit soll sein, wie diese gemeinsame Zeit im Film umgesetzt wird. Daneben gilt es zu erfragen, inwieweit Goethe als Schriftsteller dargestellt wird. Dazu soll analysiert werden, in welcher Art und Weise Christiane und Goethe im Film repräsentiert werden und wie dies im Zusammenhang mit der historischen Wirklichkeit steht. Außerdem möchte ich näher auf die Darstellung Goethes bezüglich seiner Arbeit als Schriftsteller eingehen. Zum Abschluss sollen die gewonnenen Ergebnisse in der Schlussbetrachtung aufgezeigt und zusammengefasst werden. Zu ihrer Zeit und auch noch bis zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde Christiane als die ungebildete Mätresse Goethes beschrieben. Erst ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts erschienen auch objektive Werke über Goethes Frau. 1916, zum 100. Todestag von Christiane, erschien erstmals der Briefwechsel mit 601 erhaltenen Briefen zwischen Goethe und Christiane. Leider sind nicht alle Briefe erhalten. Dennoch konnte nun erstmalig Einblick in eine Beziehung Goethes aus der Sicht der Frau gewonnen werden, wie dies auch der Film versucht. Als Literaturgrundlage dienten Werke über Christianes Beziehung zu Goethe. Eckart Kleßmanns „Christiane. Goethes Geliebte und Gefährtin“, „Frauen um Goethe“ von Astrid Seele eignen sich gut als Einstiegsliteratur. Sigrid Damms „Christiane und Goethe“ bietet einen detaillierten Einblick in Christianes Leben. Außerdem habe ich „Behalte mich ja lieb“, ebenfalls von Damm, zur Recherche der Briefe genutzt.
