On connaît Cournot comme l'un des fondateurs de la pensée probabiliste, et comme un précurseur de la mathématisation de la théorie économique. On connaît moins la riche pensée épistémologique de ce philosophe qui, après Comte mais avant Spencer, a, comme ces derniers, tenté de brosser une vaste synthèse de la connaissance de son temps. Ce fut pourtant, probablement, la « grande œuvre » de sa vie. La mécanique fut la science de sa jeunesse. Il l'aborda, selon le projet de son maître Poisson, dans une tentative de dépassement de la « mécanique analytique » de Lagrange. Leibnizien convaincu, il repérera précocement l'enjeu énergétiste de la mécanique industrielle, centrée sur le concept de « travail ». Cette « philosophie de la force » animera toute son œuvre ; il l'appliquera à la biologie, science de la « force vitale », mais aussi aux sciences sociales et à l'histoire. À travers cette œuvre, c'est toute l'histoire intellectuelle du XIXe siècle qui se dessine, dans un parcours qui invite à croiser sans cesse sciences de la nature et sciences de l'homme. Dans une telle perspective, l'« économie politique » devient le double analogique d'une vaste « économie naturelle », et Cournot, un précurseur inattendu des questionnements écologiques contemporains.

This book traces the history of the concept of work from its earliest stages and shows that its further formalization leads to equilibrium principle and to the principle of virtual works, and so pointing the way ahead for future research and applications. The idea that something remains constant in a machine operation is very old and has been expressed by many mathematicians and philosophers such as, for instance, Aristotle. Thus, a concept of energy developed. Another important idea in machine operation is Archimedes' lever principle. In modern times the concept of work is analyzed in the context of applied mechanics mainly in Lazare Carnot mechanics and the mechanics of the new generation of polytechnical engineers like Navier, Coriolis and Poncelet. In this context the word "work" is finally adopted. These engineers are also responsible for the incorporation of the concept of work into the discipline of economics when they endeavoured to combine the study of the work of machines and men together.
