[Omslag] Peu étudiée, l'interprétation de la création est pourtant l'un des axes majeurs de l'oeuvre d'Augustin. Elle s'articule autour du schème creatio, conversio, formatio. Son originalité tient à l'expérience d'Augustin, à la découverte qu'il fit de la création dans un cadre qui lui est étranger : le néoplatonisme. Cette expérience donna une orientation décisive à sa pensée : l'écho immédiat se trouve dans la polémique anti-manichéenne. Mais, plus profondément, dans les cinq commentaires sur la Génèse, Augustin reprend sa réflexion sur la création, en soulignant le lien indissociable entre creatio et formatio. C'est une véritable métaphysique de la création qui'il propose alors, à travers l'hexaéméron. Le libre don de l'être par le créateur (impliquant la création de nihilo), la constitution de l'être humain par la conversion et son accomplissement par la formatio en sont les principales composantes. Certes, Augustin ne définit pas la formatio, mais il la suggère par les métaphores de l'illumination et du repos en Dieu, ces réalités vers lesquelles pointe toute son oeuvre.
