Écrire l’histoire du christianisme contemporain, c’est chercher à le comprendre dans sa diversité confessionnelle, tout en mesurant son rôle dans la construction d’une politique et d’une culture de la modernité, qui se sont constituées en prenant leur autonomie par rapport à lui, sans que tout lien soit rompu entre notre monde sécularisé et son passé chrétien. C’est observer cet objet aux contours indécis, dont nous affirmons tantôt le déclin inéluctable, tantôt l’omniprésence au sein de nos sociétés. Depuis plus de quarante ans, Étienne Fouilloux parcourt ce territoire en voyageur infatigable, passionné d’archives inédites. De la genèse de l’oecuménisme au genre biographique, de l’histoire des intellectuels chrétiens à celle du concile Vatican II, il a construit ce qu’il désigne lui-même comme une « histoire non théologique de la théologie », attentive aux acteurs et à leurs mobiles, sans jamais céder sur la rigueur scientifique qui fonde le « regard éloigné » de l’historien. Des inventeurs du catholicisme social aux écrivains convertis, des croyants mobilisés dans les tranchées aux prêtres-ouvriers en usine, des abbés philosophes aux bâtisseurs d’églises, les auteurs de ce livre ont suivi la voie tracée par Étienne Fouilloux, attentifs comme lui aux mots qui circulent entre l’univers chrétien et l’univers laïque, la création et la mémoire, la morale et les droits de l’homme, le deuil et la patrie. Ils ont ainsi souhaité apporter leur contribution à une histoire du christianisme contemporain, en hommage à celui qui a plus que tout autre contribué à la renouveler. La critique de l'historicisme par Maurice Blondel annonce la sortie du modernisme marquée par les réflexions et les travaux de Raymond Aron et d'Henri-Irénée Marrou dont l'ouvrage De la connaissance historique permet une approche renouvelée de l'histoire des origines du christianisme. Enfin le grand essai d'Henri-Irénée Marrou sur une Théologie de l'Histoire inspirée de saint Augustin et de la culture contemporaine, qui se trouve commenté ici par André Mandouze, illustre bien le génie d'un homme qui était à la fois historien, musicologue, philosophe et théologien.

In Christian Human Rights, Samuel Moyn asserts that the rise of human rights after World War II was prefigured and inspired by a defense of the dignity of the human person that first arose in Christian churches and religious thought in the years just prior to the outbreak of the war. The Roman Catholic Church and transatlantic Protestant circles dominated the public discussion of the new principles in what became the last European golden age for the Christian faith. At the same time, West European governments after World War II, particularly in the ascendant Christian Democratic parties, became more tolerant of public expressions of religious piety. Human rights rose to public prominence in the space opened up by these dual developments of the early Cold War. Moyn argues that human dignity became central to Christian political discourse as early as 1937. Pius XII's wartime Christmas addresses announced the basic idea of universal human rights as a principle of world, and not merely state, order. By focusing on the 1930s and 1940s, Moyn demonstrates how the language of human rights was separated from the secular heritage of the French Revolution and put to use by postwar democracies governed by Christian parties, which reinvented them to impose moral constraints on individuals, support conservative family structures, and preserve existing social hierarchies. The book ends with a provocative chapter that traces contemporary European struggles to assimilate Muslim immigrants to the continent's legacy of Christian human rights.
