In dem 1920 veröffentlichten Essay „Das moderne Ich“ diagnostiziert Benn die Krankheit seiner Zeit: das Phänomen eines subjektiven Individualismus, der paradoxerweise selbst das Schaffen Benns leitmotivisch durchzieht. Die Spanne der „Ichs“ in der zerklüfteten Welt der Einzelwesen reicht bei Benn vom ”Ich-Zerfall“, vom ”Zersprengten Ich“ (Kokain, 1917), vom ”archaischen Trieb-Ich“ (Der Aufbau der Persönlichkeit, 1930), vom ”Verloren Ich“ (Verlorenes Ich, 1943) und dem ”gezeichneten Ich“ (Nur zwei Dinge, 1953) bis zum ”Ich schöpferischer Freiheit“. In der Spannung zwischen „Ich-Zerfall“ und „Wirklichkeitszertrümmerung“ sucht Benn die prälogische Urmaterie durch das magische Zaubermittel „Wort“ in Strophen zu bannen. Auf dem poetischen Umweg über das „lyrische Ich“ nähert er sich dem Phänomen des „modernen Ichs“ (des Dichters/Genius), das an dem Geist der Zeit Qualen erleidet. In drei Schritten wird Benns „Irrweg des Gehirns“ auf der Suche nach dem heraufbeschworenen „modernen Ich“ behandelt. Zunächst wird im ersten Kapitel die Frage nach den Perspektiven des modernen Ich als zeitspezifisches Phänomen in dem Essay „Das moderne Ich“ unter Einbeziehung des zivilisationskritischen Ansatzes Benns und des Phänomens des Narzissmus in Literatur, Psychologie und Philosophie angegangen. Anschließend wird in Kapitel II auf Basis des Essays „Zur Problematik des Dichterischen“ der Rückgriff auf die prälogische Materie des Ich durch den Dichter sowie die Stellung des Dichters als Genius beleuchtet. Im letzten Schritt wird das Ich „im Rauchfang seiner selbst“, also das lyrische Ich theoretisch anhand des Essays „Probleme der Lyrik“ und an möglichst repräsentativ gewählten Gedichten erprobt. Zum Abschluss wird das Verhältnis des lyrischen Ich und des lyrischen Du betrachtet, um in Erfahrung zu bringen, wie in dem ästhetischen Prinzip des Monologismus die Kommunikation mit dem Rezipienten gewährleistet bleibt.

This book is the first comprehensive study of Gottfried Benn's poetry to appear in English. It covers the entirety of Benn's verse, from his early Morgue cycle (1912) and Expressionist poems through to the «anthropological» poetry of his middle period to the «postmodern» Phase II work after the Second World War. Against the background of the poet's theoretical writings, this study, drawing upon the classic texts of Benn scholarship, analyzes in detail the major themes of his verse and its distinctive idiom. In particular, this work focuses on Gottfried Benn's extended process of rhetorical self-fashioning, his use of classical iconography, color motifs and chiffres, his often confusing historical semantics, the seemingly self-constituting «absolute» poem, and the colloquial idiom of his late verse. The book also engages with the multiplicity of voices in Benn's work and their varied textual forms, the hermeneutically variable positions of speech that they articulate and the often contradictory notion of selfhood to which they give rise.
