En este relato, con "actores invitados" como Charles Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Art Acord, Walt Disney y el propio Condorito, Fernando Purcell analiza la estrecha vinculación entre la industria fílmica y el gobierno de Estados Unidos, protagonistas de una alianza que no dudó en emplear las películas como medio de propaganda durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En forma paralela, explica cómo la sociedad chilena jugó un papel activo en la recepción y apropiación de los referentes culturales estadounidenses, detallando el modo en que ésta se "norteamericanizó" y abandonó la preeminencia de los referentes de modernidad europeos del siglo XIX. Cinema can both reflect the world as it is and offer escape from it. In Modernity at the Movies, Camila Gatica Mizala explores the ideas of reflection versus escapism and examines how modes of understanding the current moment emerged through the practice of going to the movies in Santiago and Buenos Aires between 1915 and 1945. Using cinema and variety magazines published in both cities, she analyzes the technology, architecture, attendance, behavior, language, censorship, and overall experience of cinema-going. These publications regularly engaged with important topics such as morality and urbanization and helped build a cinematographic audience. Gatica Mizala brings together the perception and reception of cinema as a modern art form, shifting the focus from the production of films to the experience of the audience when viewing them. By focusing on the audience instead of the films, this study is able to articulate the ways that cinema, as a modern activity, was incorporated into everyday life and discuss what it meant to be modern in early to midcentury Latin America.

This edited volume revisits the idea of the Western Hemisphere. First articulated by Arthur P. Whitaker in 1954 but with origins in the earlier work of Herbert E. Bolton, it is the idea that "the peoples of this Hemisphere stand in a special relationship to one another which sets them apart from the rest of the word" (Whitaker, 1954). For most scholars of US-Latin American relations, this is a curious concept. They often conceptualize US-Latin American relations through the prism of realism and interventionism. While this volume does not deny that the United States has often acted as an imperial power in Latin America, it is unique in that it challenges scholars to re-think their preconceived notions of inter-American relations and explores the possibility of a common international society for the Americas, especially in the realm of international relations. Unlike most volumes on US-Latin American relations, the book develops its argument in an interdisciplinary manner, bringing together different approaches from disciplines including international relations, global and diplomatic history, human rights studies, and cultural and intellectual history.

En las páginas de este libro es posible revisitar las intensas jornadas vividas durante los tres días de abril del año 2013 en que se desarrolló el III Encuentro Internacional de Investigación sobre Cine Chileno y Latinoamericano. Los artículos aquí publicados son un conjunto representativo de las cincuenta y cuatro ponencias que permitieron conocer los distintos enfoques que investigadores de Latinoamérica han llevado a cabo para valorizar nuestro patrimonio audiovisual y reflexionar acerca de nuestros cines. Su lectura es un fascinante recorrido por la aventura del cine en Chile y Latinoamérica. En la diversidad disciplinaria, temática y metodológica que presentan, los textos aquí reunidos resaltan grandes líneas de trabajo que cruzan la temporalidad y la espacialidad, y permiten establecer los cuatro ejes en que está estructurado el libro. El primer eje aborda, directa o tangencialmente, el tema de las identidades a partir de los sujetos. El segundo apunta a cuestiones estéticas en el cine chileno y latinoamericano de distintos periodos, incluyendo cruces con diversas disciplinas y artes, como la historia, la literatura, la fotografía, la pintura y el teatro. El tercero se hace cargo de la preocupación por el patrimonio cinematográfico desde su materialidad, y por último, el cuarto eje constituye una mirada hacia el cine realizado durante las dictaduras y después de ellas. El III Encuentro Internacional de Investigación sobre Cine Chileno y Latinoamericano fue un espacio para compartir experiencias y gestar esfuerzos comunes en el continente, en la perspectiva de la libertad de la creación, las posibilidades de producción, la circulación de las obras americanas y un pensamiento común sobre el cine. Cuando se habla del cine y sus inicios, se tiende a pensar en grandes personajes y superindustrias que, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, habrían conquistado el mundo casi sin contratiempos. Tal aseveración resulta atractiva en tanto mito fundante, mas no se sostiene desde una perspectiva social e histórica. Si se observa en profundidad el fenómeno, tarde o temprano se constatará que la formación de la esfera cinematográfica en Chile presenta dos grandes características que desdibujan el lugar común: una cultura empresarial marcadamente plebeya y una altísima conflictividad social y política. A partir del trabajo con documentos comerciales, prensa, revistas y archivos estatales, entre 1907 (con la primera sala de cine regular) y 1932 (año en que la sonorización y la crisis económica anunciaban un nuevo ciclo), este libro afirma que el cinematógrafo, luego de una recepción tibia (y racional) entre los sectores oligárquicos, se masificó a partir de gestores reacios a la cultura dominante, en biógrafos baratos y populares, con imágenes generalmente conflictivas para la élite ("picantes", "subversivas"). Como consecuencia de este desafío, diversos poderes sociales y políticos implementaron estrategias de represión y cooptación que, si bien concentraron fuertemente el paisaje cinematográfico, no lograron quitarle del todo su tinte confrontacional. En otras palabras, La masificación del cine en Chile, 1907-1932 busca hacer justicia con la dimensión colectiva y abierta de los procesos socioculturales. No se trata de una historia cerrada entre productores y consumidores, sino de un cuadro más amplio: de cómo distribuidores y exhibidores, públicos y cronistas, políticos y censores, confluyeron y lucharon para construir proyectos de esfera cinematográfica.
