Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,00, University of Heidelberg, course: Henry David Thoreau, language: English, abstract: I. Introduction In the chapter "Where I lived and What I lived for", Thoreau explains what he wanted to achieve by his experiment: I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; not did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and such out all the marrow of life [...] to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it [...]. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God [...]. (W, 72) This passage demonstrates Thoreau's desire to establish a relationship to the world around him. Feeling that, like most people, he lived "what was not life", he moves to Walden Pond in order to find out for himself what life actually was. He feels that nature can reveal truths and meanings to him and thus help him to overcome the "strange uncertainty" about the character of the world and of his own life. But if nature seemed to "communicate" with man, how could he make sure to understand its message? ... In order to 'translate' his experience to his readers, Thoreau uses natural imagery in a highly symbolic way. ... In the book we find the pond described in a very detailed way: its size, the depth, the flora and fauna. The meanings of these descriptions are various and at the end this small body of water comes to symbolize almost everything of Tho

In the book we find the pond described in a very detailed way: its size, the depth, the flora and fauna. The meanings of these descriptions are various and at the end this small body of water comes to symbolize almost everything of Thoreau’s spiritual, philosophical and personal message. In order to demonstrate this, it is necessary to look closely at what Thoreau has to say about the pond and his relationship to it. Because water, the element of the pond, is a powerful symbol in itself, I will begin by a short introduction of a universal symbolism of water and examine how this symbolism is applied in Walden. I will then proceed to a more specific analysis of the pond imaginary, which is particularly concentrated in the chapters “The Ponds” and “The Pond in Winter” and “Spring”. [...]

Reimagining Thoreau written by Robert Milder and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Reimagining Thoreau synthesizes the interests of the intellectual and psychological biographer and the literary critic in a reconsideration of Thoreau's career from his graduation from Harvard in 1837 to his death in 1862. The purposes of the book are threefold: 1) to situate Thoreau's aims and achievements as a writer within the context of his troubled relationship to m microcosm of ante-bellum Concord; 2) to reinterpret Walden as a temporally layered text in light of the successive drafts of the book and the evidence of Thoreau's journals and contemporaneous writings; and 3) toverturn traditional views of Thoreau's decline by offering a new estimate of the post-Walden writing and its place within Thoreau's development.

Topography And Deep Structure In Plato written by Clinton DeBevoise Corcoran and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-15 with Philosophy categories.

A literary and historical analysis of the structure and meaning of recurrent symbols, images, and actions employed in Plato’s dialogues. In this book, Clinton DeBevoise Corcoran examines the use of place in Plato’s dialogues. Corcoran argues that spatial representations, such as walls, caves, and roads, as well as the creation of eternal patterns and chaotic images in the particular spaces, times, characterizations, and actions of the dialogues, provide clues to Plato’s philosophic project. Throughout the dialogues, the Good serves as an overarching ordering principle for the construction of place and the proper limit of spaces, whether they be here in the world, deep in the underworld, or in the nonspatial ideal realm of the Forms. The Good, since it escapes the limits of space and time, equips Plato with a powerful mythopoetic tool to create settings, frames, and arguments that superimpose different dimensions of reality, allowing worlds to overlap that would otherwise be incommensurable. The Good also serves as a powerful ethical tool for evaluating the order of different spaces. Corcoran explores how Plato uses wrestling and war as metaphors for the mixing of the nonspatial, eternal forms in the world and history, and how he uses spatial images throughout the dialogues to critique Athens’s tragic overreach in the Peloponnesian War. Far from merely an incidental backdrop in the dialogues, place etches the tragic intersection of the mortal and the immortal, good and evil, and Athens’s past, present, and future.

A Brief Systematic Theology Of The Symbol written by Joshua Mobley and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-18 with Religion categories.

How do Christians understand the Trinity? How does this understanding relate to other Christian teachings? In conversation with key thinkers in contemporary and classical theology, particularly Henri de Lubac, Karl Rahner, Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, this book argues that a theology of symbols can help us glimpse the mystery of the Trinity and see how this central Christian teaching corresponds to Christian understandings of creation, humanity and the church. A symbol is not here understood as an arbitrary sign, but as a sign that mediates the presence of the symbolized. Joshua Mobley examines the understanding of the Father as “symbolized” in the Son who is the “symbol” of the Father by the “symbolism” of the Spirit, the personal agent of unity between Father and Son. These trinitarian relations then structure creaturely relations to God: God is symbolized in creation, which is a symbol of God by participation in the Son, and the church is symbolism, the union of creation with God by the power of the Spirit. Mobley thus argues that a theology of symbol helps coordinate trinitarian theology with key themes in Christian dogmatics.
