What we have here is a journal designed to document in photographs a few critical areas of Far Rockaway prior to several major building projects currently being financed through private speculators under New York City management's guidance and supervision in yet another attempt at gentrification. Only modestly differing in general appearance throughout the past seventy years despite a failed full-scale revitalization program in 1977, the small commercial district will now experience a somewhat delayed introduction into the 21st Century. A new and ultra-modern library facility as well as a centrally-located high-rise apartment complex -- both now underway -- will ultimately alter the landscape of this southern section of the Borough of Queens. This booklet of over 200 color photos taken during three separate visits in October of 2007 and 2008, before the drastic rezoning/restructuring, will serve as a permanent record of the Village of Far Rockaway as fondly remembered by the two authors.

“By turns heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny.” —Kristin Rockaway, author of How To Hack a Heartbreak “Sensitive, thoughtful, and touching.” —Library Journal A young widow must face the grief she’s always set aside when an unexpected delivery throws her life into disarray Twenty-nine-year-old Charlotte Rosen has a secret: she’s a widow. Ever since the fateful day that leveled her world, Charlotte has worked hard to move forward. Great job at a hot social media analytics company? Check. Roommate with no knowledge of her past? Check. Adorable dog? Check. All the while, she’s faithfully data-crunched her way through life, calculating the probability of risk—so she can avoid it. Yet Charlotte’s algorithms could never have predicted that her late husband’s ashes would land squarely on her doorstep five years later. Stunned but determined, Charlotte sets out to find meaning in this sudden twist of fate, even if that includes facing her perfectly coiffed, and perfectly difficult, ex-mother-in-law—and her husband’s best friend, who seems to become a fixture at her side whether she likes it or not. But when her quest reveals a shocking secret, Charlotte is forced to answer questions she never knew to ask and to consider the possibility of forgiveness. And when a chance at a new life arises, she’ll have to decide once and for all whether to follow the numbers or trust her heart.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 introduces new geography and geometry spatial datatypes that enable the storage of structured data describing the shape and position of objects in space. This is an interesting and exciting new feature, with many potentially useful applications. Beginning Spatial with SQL Server 2008 covers everything you need to know to begin using these new spatial datatypes, and explains how to apply them in practical situations involving the spatial relationships of people, places, and things on the earth. All of the spatial concepts introduced are explained from the ground up, so you need not have any previous knowledge of working with spatial data. Every section is illustrated with code examples that you can use directly in SQL Server. All of the topics covered in this book apply to all versions of SQL Server 2008, including the freely available SQL Server 2008 Express. What you’ll learn Understand the fundamental concepts involved in working with spatial data, including spatial references and coordinate systems. Apply these concepts in the collection and storage of spatial data in SQL Server 2008, using the new geometry and geography field types. Create different types of spatial data objects—points, lines, and polygons—and use these to describe real–world objects. Learn how to analyze spatial data using a range of supported methods, and be aware of a number of different practical applications for these methods. Be shown how to integrate SQL Server with other tools, such as Microsoft Virtual Earth, to display a visual representation of spatial data. Know how to ensure the performance of spatially enabled databases by creating appropriate spatial indexes. Who this book is for SQL Server developers who wish to use spatial data in Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

The Sounds Of Early Cinema written by Richard Abel and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-10-03 with Performing Arts categories.

The Sounds of Early Cinema is devoted exclusively to a little-known, yet absolutely crucial phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910). Contributors include Richard Abel, Rick Altman, Edouard Arnoldy, Mats Björkin, Stephen Bottomore, Marta Braun, Jean Châteauvert, Ian Christie, Richard Crangle, Helen Day-Mayer, John Fullerton, Jane Gaines, André Gaudreault, Tom Gunning, François Jost, Charlie Keil, Jeff Klenotic, Germain Lacasse, Neil Lerner, Patrick Loughney, David Mayer, Domi-nique Nasta, Bernard Perron, Jacques Polet, Lauren Rabinovitz, Isabelle Raynauld, Herbert Reynolds, Gregory A. Waller, and Rashit M. Yangirov.
