Inmitten der studentischen Unruhen erschien 1969 Ulrich Sonnemanns Negative Anthropologie. Mit ihr legte der Philosoph und politische Schriftsteller einen zeitkritischen Kommentar und zugleich eine negativ-dialektische Durchdringung des Freudomarxismus der Studierenden vor. Das Werk bestätigte seine notorische Bekanntheit als eingriffsfreudiger kritischer Humanist und bewies seine Nähe zur Kritischen Theorie des Frankfurter Instituts für Sozialforschung. Sonnemanns Sozialphilosophie problematisiert die Annahme einer vermeintlichen Naturhaftigkeit in den Selbstbildern des Menschen, wie sie Anthropologie, Marxismus und Psychoanalyse seiner Zeit entwerfen. Im Modus der bestimmten Negation erforscht Sonnemann die Widersprüche anthropologischer Theorien, deren Verstrickungen in gesellschaftliche Praxis er unnachgiebig ins Bewusstsein ruft. Damit ist negative Anthropologie Einmischung in ihren Gegenstand: Sie will die menschliche Welt verstehen, um das Verstandene zu verändern – indem sie daran erinnert, dass es menschliche Aufgabe bleibt, eine dem Gattungswesen gerechte Welt herzustellen. Angesichts eines wiedererwachten Interesses an der Negativen Anthropologie befragt der Band Sonnemanns Denken auf seine Aktualität. Anhand akuter Gegenstände und Fragen demonstrieren die Beiträge die Möglichkeiten kritischer Eingriffe im Modus negativer Anthropologie. Ideengeschichtliche und systematische Argumentationen werden zusammengeführt und die Denkfigur einer negativen Anthropologie auf diese Weise als immer noch dringlicher Ansatz der Kritischen Theorie erhellt. Entstanden sind dabei sowohl geschichtskritische als auch ästhetische, religionsphilosophische und sprachkritische Anknüpfungen an Sonnemanns Werk. Die Negative Anthropologie erscheint dabei nicht als inventarisierbares Dokument einer abgeschlossenen Zeitgeschichte, sondern als ein Verfahren, in aufmerksamer Tuchfühlung mit dem Tagesgeschehen zu bleiben. "Metaphysik": In seiner Metaphysik argumentiert Aristoteles (gegen Platons Annahme von abstrakten Entitäten) zunächst dafür, dass die konkreten Einzeldinge (wie Sokrates) die Substanzen, d. h. das Grundlegende aller Wirklichkeit sind. Dies ergänzt er um seine spätere Lehre, wonach die Substanz konkreter Einzeldinge ihre Form ist. "Nikomachische Ethik": Das Ziel des menschlichen Lebens, so Aristoteles in seiner Ethik, ist das gute Leben, das Glück. Für ein glückliches Leben muss man Verstandestugenden und (durch Erziehung und Gewöhnung) Charaktertugenden ausbilden, wozu ein entsprechender Umgang mit Begierden und Emotionen gehört. "Das Organon": Der Themenbereich Sprache, Logik und Wissen ist vor allem in den Schriften behandelt, die traditionell unter dem Titel Organon zusammengestellt sind. "Über die Dichtkunst": In seiner Theorie der Dichtung behandelt Aristoteles insbesondere die Tragödie, deren Funktion aus seiner Sicht darin besteht, Furcht und Mitleid zu erregen, um beim Zuschauer eine Reinigung von diesen Emotionen zu bewirken (katharsis). "Die "Physik": Sie befasst sich mit der Erklärung und Erläuterung (Definition) einiger grundlegender Begriffe, die bei der Beschreibung von Naturvorgängen im täglichen Leben gebraucht werden. Die wichtigsten davon sind: Raum, Zeit, Bewegung und Ursache. Es handelt sich nicht um eine mathematische Darlegung der Grundzüge der Natur in heutigem Sinne.

Kant's Critique of Pure Reason lays the foundation of his Systematic Metaphysics published across a dozen works with the singular aim of 'fixing' the field by reconciling Rationalism, Idealism, and Empiricism to move Metaphysics into a full form of Science, much, in the same manner, the Greeks did to Logic or The Renaissance logicians to the hard sciences. Kant sparked a metaphysical revolution which he understands as akin to the Copernican revolution. The question of how the iterations of the transcendent 'I' through time and space can 'know' anything (make synthetic a priori judgments) with any level of certainty takes the proscenium in the Critique. David Hume's fundamental error in Kant's view is that he assumes a Rationality which is Techne without Telos, a description only of what is, not what should be. To this end, he uses a Greek conception of Rationality as logos within a Platonic Ontology, splitting reality into two subdivisions between form and sense- perception, between Numinal and a phenomenological world. As physics is pure science, metaphysics is pure philosophy; "Pure knowledge of reason from mere concepts is called pure philosophy, or metaphysics... Metaphysics, then, both of nature and of morals, and especially the critique of reason venturing out on its own wings, which precedes it in a propaedeutic way, are actually the only things that we can call philosophy in the true sense of the word".
