Finding the phenomenon of solidarity an erratic block in the midst of the moral landscape of the modern age, scientists from philosophy, sociology, history, law, psychology, and biology met in the Autumn of 1994 at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, to ponder the concept, its history, and its significance. Those presentations are here augmented by others to expand the coverage. Among the topics are four uses of solidarity, fraternity and justice, the bonds and bounds of solidarity, theoretical perspectives for empirical research, institutional and social concepts of solidarity in 19th-century western Europe, constitutional law, citizenship, and post-modern perspectives. The labor movement is even mentioned a few times. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

A Cultural History Of The Modern Age Vol 3 written by Egon Friedell and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with History categories.

Volume three of A Cultural History of the Modern Age finishes a journey that begins with Descartes in the first volume and ends with Freud and the psychoanalytical movement in the third volume. Friedell describes the contents of these books as a series of performances, starting with the birth of the man of the Modern Age, followed by flowering of this epoch, and concludes with the death of the Modern Age. This huge landscape provides an intertwining of the material and the cultural, the civil and the military, from the high points of creative flowering in Europe to death and emptiness. The themes convey multiple messages: romanticism and liberalism opens the cultural scene, encased in a movement from The Congress of Vienna and its claims of peaceful co-existence to the Franco-German War. The final segment covers the period from Bismarck's generation to World War I. In each instance, the quotidian life of struggle, racial, religious, and social class is seen through the lens of the mighty figures of the period. The works of the period's great figures are shown in the new light of the human search for symbolism, the search for superman, the rise of individualism and decline of history as a source for knowledge. This third volume is painted in dark colors, a foreboding of the world that was to come, of political extremes, and intellectual exaggerations. The author looks forward to a postmodern Europe in which there is a faint glean of light from the other side. What actually appeared was the glare of Nazism and Communism, each claiming the future.

Re Thinking Diversity written by Cordula Braedel-Kühner and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-01 with Social Science categories.

This volume entails a collection of new ideas, themes and questions towards a phenomenon which we are used to refer to with the key term “diversity”. The aim of the book is to offer a cultural sciences perspective on “diversity”, to advance knowledge about it and enrich the dialogue between academics and practitioners in related domains of action. Today, changes in the demographic structures of the population, the migration flux, multiculturalism, the rising awareness concerning minorities’ rights, gender studies and so on lead to a complex picture of what “diversity” means. The narrative of a society and of most organizations is constituted by multiple layers of social categorization, segregation and identity. Therefore, “diversity” defies simple definition. The contributions in this volume approach the phenomenon from different angles and reveal new theoretical, methodological and practical perspectives on it.

Anthropology In Theological Perspective written by Wolfhart Pannenberg and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-23 with Religion categories.

In this comprehensive study, a renowned theologian examines the anthropological disciplines-human biology, psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology and history-for their religious implications. The result is a theological anthropology that does not derive from dogma or prejudice, but critically evaluates the findings of the disciplines. Pannenberg begins with a consideration of human beings as part of nature; moves on to focus on the human person; and then considers the social world: its culture, history and institutions. All the elements of this multi-faceted study unite in the final chapter on the relation of human beings to their history.

A Christian Theology in Modern Times: Contextual Fundamental Theology The handbook of fundamental theology is the result of 20 years of teaching and research and appeared already in seven different languages; a Chinese edition is on the way. .Hans Waldenfels taught from 1977 - 1997 on the chair in Bonn where the former Pope Benedict XVI. - Joseph Ratzinger began his scholarly career. He came to Bonn with the experience of almost ten years life in Japan where he encountered a totally different language and culture. There and in other parts of Asia inculturation became a life experience for him. Following the three classical topics of fundamental theology - God, Jesus Christ, the Church - Waldenfels asks how they fit into the different contexts of ethnic, cultural, religious and ideological contexts of life and finally reflects the process of Christian theology. The handbook shows that modern Christian theology needs a profound knowledge and analysis of the pluriformity of human and social life and at the same time an equally deep involvement in the mystery of the divine as it appears in the life and death of Jesus Christ. It calls for a strong connection of historical awareness and an insatiable desire of the infinite Beyond.

Luke S Portrait Of Gentiles Prior To Their Coming To Faith written by Christoph W. Stenschke and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Religion categories.

Christoph W. Stenschke examines Luke's portrait of the Gentiles' state prior to their coming to Christian faith. Following the history of research, he commences with Luke's direct references to the Gentiles prior to faith and then draws conclusions concerning their state from the Gentile encounter with Jesus and Christian salvation. This includes Luke's notes on the condition of Gentiles and on their appropriation of salvation. Finally conclusions from Luke's portrayal of Gentile Christians are drawn. With his approach Christoph W. Stenschke challenges some previous contributions to Lukan anthropology. He argues that the main study in the field (J.-W. Taeger, Der Mensch und sein Heil) does not sufficiently consider all the evidence. By concentrating on the Gentiles in Luke-Act (including Samaritans and God-fearers) the author's thesis covers all the relevant material. Contrary to Taeger, who suggests that Gentiles do not need 'salvation' as much as 'correction', he discovers that Luke portrays Gentiles prior to faith in a condition requiring God's saving intervention. Thorough correction has to accompany and follow this salvation. Though allowing for distinct Lukan emphases, this portrait is not essentially at odds with that of other NT authors. These results further show that the Areopagus speech needs to and can be satisfactorily interpreted in its context and in conjunction with similar statements. The author further argues that Luke's narrative sections and the characterization they present should no longer be neglected in favour of the speeches. Luke's portrayal of Gentiles prior to faith also bears on his understanding of sin and provides additional justification for the Gentile mission. Christoph W. Stenschke challenges proposals of Luke's alleged anti-Judaism and provides some hitherto little-noticed correctives.
