Forkel dedicated the work to Gottfried van Swieten. Van Swieten was an early Bach adept, for instance making Mozart familiar with the baroque composer.

Wie sehr Forkel an der deutschen Erbkrankheit laborierte, im eigenen Lande alles besser zu finden als anderswo, das zeigt schon seine Vorrede, die wir darum hier nur in ihren wesentlichen Teilen abdrucken. Man muß Forkel freilich zugute halten, daß er im Zeitalter der napoleoni schen Kriege lebte. Auch war er kein so universaler Geist, um wie ein Goethe die Gefahren des Nationalismus schon damals erkennen zu können, und so sehen wir ihn mit besonderem Stolz dem Genie Bachs als einem deutschen Genie nachgehen, während wir heute doch lieber be kennen möchten, daß Bach der ganzen Menschheit ge schenkt worden ist.
