The history of the Russian fascist movement in Harbin, Manchuria during the 1930s has become increasingly relevant to our understanding of modern Russia. As a railway junction and an important centre of the Jewish Diaspora, the city of Harbin became a focus of Russian emigration to Manchuria in the early 1930s, partly because of its proximity to the resource-rich Manchurian plains. In this multicultural and cosmopolitan setting the first Russian fascist groups were established. Based on an analysis of Russian civil society, Fascism in Manchuria sheds light on the impact of the newly-founded All-Russian Fascist Party on the Russian emigre community, employing the concept of 'dark' civil society. Suzanne Hohler demonstrates how fascist involvement in local civil society increasingly determined public opinion, examining the power of the military organizations, the symbols and style of the fascist organizations, the cult of the leader as well as the 'public-relations' activities of the fascist organizations and of the so-called Russian Club. In this context the book provides not only insights into the history and ideology of the far eastern branch of Russian fascism and its transnational connections, but also touches upon a variety of issues of daily life in the city, issues such as education, drug addiction and hooliganism among Russian youth, the local YMCA, the famous Kaspe kidnapping and the rise of anti-Semitism. These two volumes offer a selection of the papers held at the conference of the International Association for Dialogue Analysis (IADA) in 2003. Nach 50 Jahren Aufenthalt in unserem Land hat der Autor häufig bemerkt, dass sogar geistige Eliten unseres Landes gewisse Unsicherheiten und Probleme an den Tag legen, wenn man über die deutsche Identität spricht. Er beschreibt in diesem Buch die Elemente der Identität eines einzelnen Menschen und darauf aufbauend die Identität der deutschen Gesellschaft. Diese hat sehr viele Facetten, die aus der Sprache, der Geschichte, der Kultur, der Wirtschaft, der Bildung und der Wissenschaft, der Religion und letztendlich auch der Politik gebildet werden. Tatsache ist, dass die deutsche Identität sehr viel mehr ist als die Reduktion auf die 12 Jahre Nazi-Zeit oder auf wilhelminische Zeiträume oder die Nachkriegszeit in der BRD oder in der DDR. Wir sollten nie vergessen, dass das 19. Jahrhundert eine Epoche der geistigen Elite war. Mit dem Hambacher Fest, und der Paulskirche wurde ein Zeichen der Freiheit und des Geistes gesetzt. Philosophen wie Kant, Nietzsche, Leibnitz, Hegel und Marx waren Höhepunkte der deutschen Philosophie, deutsche Wissenschaftler und Künstler haben das Bild von Deutschland als dem Land der Dichter und Denker geprägt. Man darf allerdings nicht den Holocaust verleugnen oder verharmlosen. Der Antisemitismus war schon vor dem 3. Reich in Deutschland verwurzelt und kommt heute wieder zum Vorschein. Dies vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmenden Verunsicherung der Menschen und Angst vor den bevorstehenden Umwälzungen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Deutschland ist eingebettet in die Europäische Gemeinschaft und in die gemeinsamen Werte und Kultur und selbst gemeinsame Erlebnisse von Tod und Leid durch Kriege prägen unsere europäische Identität. Das Bewusstsein darüber ist allerdings in den letzten Jahren aufgrund von Egoismen, mangelnden Visionen, ernsthaften Rückschritten im Streben nach gemeinsamen Werten und einer Rückkehr zu den nationalen Kleinstaatlichkeiten immer mehr verloren gegangen. Dies wird uns teuer zu stehen kommen.
