Within the last decade, the high and continuing demand for gold has prompted a global gold rush on a scale never before seen, not even in the heady days of Ballarat, California and the Yukon. Gold is being sought on every continent and, with very few exceptions, in every country around the world. Such interest and fierce competition has demanded considerable innovation and improvement in exploration techniques paralleled by a rapid expansion of the geological database and consequent genetic modelling for the many different types of gold deposits now recognized. This proliferation of data has swamped the literature and left explorationist and academic alike unable to sift more than a small proportion of the accumulating information. This new book represents an attempt to address this major problem by providing succinct syntheses ofall major aspects ofgold metallogeny and exploration, ranging from the chemical distribution of gold in the Earth's crust, and the hydrothermal chemistry of gold, to Archaean and Phanerozoic lode deposits, epithermal environments, chemical sediments, and placer deposits, and culminates in chapters devoted to geochemical and geophysical exploration, and the economics of gold deposits. Each chapter is written by geoscientists who are acknowledged internationally in their respective fields, thus guaranteeing a broad yet up-to-date coverage. In addition, each chapter is accompanied by reference lists which provide readers with access to the most pertinent and useful publications.

The Canadian segment of the Archean Superior province is a major world source of lode gold. The gold deposits occur in or near regional transcurrent and oblique slip-shear deformation zones that comprise a conjugate set to a northwest- directed compression of the Superior province. These structures provided permeable pathways for the flow of large volumes of auriferous fluid derived from an external source. Historic gold production from the United States segment of the Superior province is modest, but the close similarity in the geologic environment of the United States and Canadian segments suggests that large gold deposits should be present in the U.S.A. An occurrence model largely based on known parameters of gold mineralization in Canada suggests that the greenstone-granite terranes of the Wawa and Wabigoon sub-provinces in the United States are favorable for important gold deposits. The model suggests that gold mineralization took place during or later than the transcurrent faulting and that it took place contemporaneously with emplacement of silica-undersaturated intrusions. The faulting occurred late in the igneous-tectonic history of the Superior province, about 2,690 Ma. Extensive, intense alteration comprising carbonitization, silicification, and sulfidization accompanied the gold mineralization. The relationships between alteration minerals and mineralized veins suggest a close temporal relationship between the alteration and gold mineralization processes. The proposed occurrence model for gold mineralization and the available data suggest that two broad regions of greenstone in the Archean Superior province in north-central United States are particularly favorable for gold deposits: (1) the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and (2) northeastern Minnesota. The Ishpeming greenstone belt of the Wawa subprovince in Michigan contains the important Ropes deposit and several other known gold occurrences, and the Vermilion district (Wawa subprovince) in northeastern Minnesota contains highly anomalous gold in soils and minor known bedrock occurrences. Transcurrent faults in both areas should be favorable sites for gold mineralization

[Truncated abstract] The Archean orogenic New Celebration gold deposit, located in the Kalgoorlie Terrane of the Eastern Goldfields Province, Western Australia, is hosted within the western segment of the first-order Boulder Lefroy fault zone (BLFZ). This setting contrasts with the majority of orogenic lode gold deposits worldwide, which are typically located in higher order splays, and as such, the New Celebration deposit provides a unique opportunity to study the hydrothermal, structural, alteration and fluid characteristics of a first-order crustal scale shear zone. Fluid inclusion, sulfur isotope and mineral chemistry were used to reconstruct the evolution of hydrothermal fluids within the BLFZ. Vein petrography, fluid inclusion microthermometry and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry microanalysis (LA-ICP-MS) of single fluid inclusions, in addition to laser ablation sulfide sulfur isotope analyses and LA-ICP-MS mineral chemistry were combined to determine the pressure-temperaturecomposition evolution of the New Celebration gold deposit. At New Celebration, gold mineralization took place in two stages: Stage I, which is related to ductile, sinistral oblique slip fault movement and Stage II, which is related to brittle-ductile and brittle strike-slip fault movement. Type 2 quartz and quartzcalcite shear and extension veins concomitant with Stage I gold mineralization contain pseudo-secondary 2- and 3-phase aqueous-carbonic (10 ± 1 to 33 ± 13 mole % CO2) inclusions with salinities between 2 and 8 equiv. wt. percent NaCl, which were trapped between 330° and 390° C and 3.2 and 4.0 kbars. Mixed aqueous-carbonic inclusions (16 ± 3to 53 ± 28 mole % CO2) and aqueous”carbonic fluid (3 mole % CO2) inclusions with variable phase ratios and salinities of 1.9 ± 1.1to 8.7 ± 2.6 equiv. wt. percent NaCl in type 3 quartz-pyrite±sericite±calcite veins and quartz-calcite alteration associated with Stage II gold mineralization were trapped between 280° and 320° C and 0.8 to 3.2 kbars. Coexisting liquid- and vapor-rich inclusions within the same trail or cluster indicate these inclusions were trapped during phase separation. Secondary high-salinity (18.4 to 23.3 equiv. wt. % NaCl) aqueous inclusions, and metane inclusion, which postdated gold mineralization, were trapped in type 2 and type 3 veins between 100° C and 180° C and pressures below 1 kbar. Single inclusion laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses on aqueous and aqueous-carbonic inclusions indicate that the Stage I gold related fluids were characteristically NaCa>K> Mg (K/Ca 1) whereas Stage II fluids are NaMg>K”Ca (K/Ca >1) and contained higher concentrations of, Pb, Zn, As, and W than Stage I fluids. Average Au concentrations from both Stage I and Stage II-related aqueous-carbonic inclusions returned values around 5 parts per million (ppm) although individual inclusions contained up to 51 ppm. Variations in metal ratios and elemental concentrations, in addition to K/Ca ratios potentially indicate different fluid sources for each mineralizing event and suggest that a switch occurred in fluid and/or metal sources between Stage I and Stage II...

In recent years, there has been increasing interest from geoscientists in potassic ig neous rocks. Academic geoscientists have been interested in their petrogenesis and their potential value in defining the tectonic setting of the terranes into which they were intruded, and exploration geoscientists have become increasingly interested in the association of these rocks with major epithermal gold and porphyry gold-copper deposits. Despite this current interest, there is no comprehensive textbook that deals with these aspects of potassic igneous rocks. This book redresses this situation by elucidating the characteristic features of potassic (high-K) igneous rocks, erecting a hierarchical scheme that allows interpre tation of their tectonic setting using whole-rock geochemistry, and investigating their associations with a variety of gold and copper-gold deposits, worldwide. About two thirds of the book is based on a PhD thesis by Dr Daniel Muller which was produced at the Key Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits within the Department of Geology and Geophysics at The University of Western Australia under the supervision of Professor David Groves, the late Dr Nick Rock, Professor Eugen Stumpf!, Dr Wayne Taylor, and Dr Brendon Griffin. The remainder of the book has been compiled from the literature using the collective experience of the two authors. The book is dedi cated to the memory of Dr Rock who initiated the research project but died before its completion.

“Perestroika” in the former Soviet Union at the end of 1980s and subsequent breakdown of the country with the Common Wealth of Independent States (CIS) formation has opened a vast new region for the western mining companies for exploration and development. The possibility of finding unexplored gold deposits was one of the major incentives that attracted many small and big mining companies to CIS because this region of Eurasia is famous for containing the world’s largest cumulative gold reserve. However, because of the Soviet secrecy laws regarding all gold-related information, very little has been known about already explored gold deposits and their potential. “Gold Deposits of the CIS” represents the first comprehensive study in English of the gold and gold-silver deposits and their resources of the former Soviet Union. The book includes: (1) a history of gold exploration and mining in this region from ancient times, (2) the contemporary classification of the deposits, (3) a detailed description of more than 50 major and most representative gold and gold-silver deposits – all including their location, geological setting, structure, alteration style, mineralogy and resources and reserves and (4) the reserve estimation of all former Soviet gold-producing countries and their potential for possible new discoveries. Several explored and developed into production deposits, such as Kupol, Sarylakh, Sentachan, Natal'evskoye, Kuro-Tegerek, Zod, and some others, are described in English for the first time. The book gives a significant body of new information for exploration and mining companies, scientists, faculties and students of mining schools, as well as policy makers concerned with exploration and development of gold deposits in the world. Also, it provides important material for comparative studies between the gold deposits of the former Soviet Union and the West.
