I am seventy-six years of age, have had two heart attacks, and am not really very well. My memory, though, is fine, except sometimes for “names,” but I recall the events as vividly as if they are occurring now. My “Far” passed away on June 10, 2013. Today is Valentine’s Day and I visited my Far twice. Our home on 2665 La Veta Avenue is a mere two minutes away. I have just returned from San Bernardino Community Hospital where I visited a patient, in my capacity as a Muslim chaplain. I am not sure who, if anyone, will ever read this book. It is a chronicle of our wonderful life, but there are many “Cinderella” stories. This is not a masterpiece of the English language, nor is it in any way unique. Writing gave me a great deal of pleasure. I knew I had angels beside me, and at all times, one seraph. We have had much joy, pleasure, excitement, much to wonder about, and much to puzzle over. We have laughed and cried, nearly just as much, sometimes out of pleasure and sometimes out of pain and grief; always, we have “walked with God.” We have made many mistakes—we are only human—and have alienated far too many, but never deliberately nor out of meanness. Those who love us will perhaps forgive, and those who do not may hopefully forget our transgressions, real or imagined, always remembering what Jesus said about “casting stones.” We tried to make a difference and, with the help of God, we did. In as much as this humble effort reflects the insuperable challenges of finding peace and harmony in a small family, I believe it resonates with the pain and suffering inflicted by man on his fellow man, in places like Syria, Central Africa, and the Ukraine, and with more natural disasters such as hurricanes, typhoons, and tornadoes, which create no less pain and suffering. As I approach the end of my life, I continue in the Ministry of Healing, in the hope that the solace and comfort I attempt to deliver will not be entirely unselfish. Dr. Frank A. As diamond prospector, gold-panner, surveyor of the uncharted bush, hunter and builder of roads, Matthew Young spent over fifty years working in the wild forests and savannahs of his native Guyana. He writes vividly of the beauties and hazards of that life, of marauding jaguars, deadly labaria snakes dropping from the trees, piranhas that can strip the flesh from a body in seconds and thirty foot anacondas that can squeeze the life out of a man; of battling up river against life-threatening rapids and thunderous waterfalls. His is a story of resourcefulness and wonder, of a practical man who never lost his sense of the forest's mystery, who learnt a profound respect for the culture, knowledge and skills of the Amerindians of the interior. This is a fascinating social history from colonial times to the 1980s, including Young's involvement with the aftermath of the tragic mass suicide of over 900 followers of the American cult leader Jim Jones at Jonestown in the Guyanese interior. Guyana: The Lost El Dorado gives an engrossing account of one of the last untouched tropical rainforests in the world and its teeming wildlife. It is an indispensable guidebook for the intrepid armchair traveller, gold prospector and diamond panner!

"At the instigation of William Gladstone, this challenge was met by implementing a controversial plan he had conceived, namely, the recruitment and importation of indentured workers from various places, but primarily from India, then the "jewel in the Crown" of the British Empire. This book is the story of these immigrants, who were transported from one side of the globe to another, almost exclusively in sailing ships."--BOOK JACKET.

South America's often overlooked English-speaking country lies far off the well-trodden tourist path. Guyana is the ideal destination for the discerning visitor seeking adventure. Within its vast interior, the Guiana Shield (one of the four pristine tropical rainforests left in the world) converges with the Amazon Basin, creating a unique geography composed of coastal waters, mangroves, marshes, savannas, mountains and tropical rainforests.Bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean, the lively locals - a melting pot of East Indian and African descendants, peppered with Chinese, Europeans and Amerindians - create a culture decidedly more Caribbean than Latin.
