En este volumen recopilatorio, Jorge Mañach responde a la pregunta: “¿Qué significan estos sucesos del 10 de marzo? En su gran bulto, significa algo muy doloroso: el retorno del militarismo a la vida pública cubana”. Esto lo escribió Mañach siete días después del golpe militar mediante el cual Fulgencio Batista asumió el poder en Cuba. A partir de esa fecha y hasta 1956, publicó decenas de textos en los que argumentó de manera clara su franca oposición al régimen. No dejó de defender, al mismo tiempo, su idea de que la vía para restaurar la democracia y reconquistarle al pueblo cubano sus libertades, era la vía política. Opinaba que a la violencia se recurre únicamente cuando no queda otra opción. Y sostenía que “por ese camino se va a la guerra civil o a tiranía”. Aunque algunos de los artículos que aquí se rescatan aparecieron en el Diario de la Marina, la mayor parte de ellos y sobre todo los más abiertamente críticos, aparecieron en Bohemia, revista con la cual tenía una buena sintonía en la orientación ideológica, y en la cual llevaba ya siete años colaborando. En los trabajos periodísticos que se recogen en este volumen, Mañach conjugó admirablemente los conocimientos y experiencias que había adquirido a través de su actividad política, con la perspicacia, la precisión de los análisis y la penetración que lo distinguían como ensayista. Abundan las reflexiones de notable calado y los comentarios agudos e iluminadores, y están escritos con el inconfundible estilo y elegancia que distinguió a quien los firma.
