The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when ScHAWLOW and TowNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e.g. spectroscopy), optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple. The main questions are: what are the light intensities (a), what are the frequencies (b), what fluctua tions occur (c), or, in other words, what are the coherence properties. Roughly speaking these questions are treated by means of the rate equations (a), the semiclassical equations (b), and the fully quantum mechanical equations (c), respectively. The corresponding chapters are written in such a way that they can be read independently from each other. For more details about how to proceed, the reader is advised to consult Chap. I.4.

Baer's biography of the former Czechoslovak foreign minister Vladimír Clementis (1902–1952) is the first historical study on the Communist politician who was executed with Rudolf Slánský and other top Communist Party members after the show trial of 1952. Born in Tisovec, Central Slovakia, Clementis studied law at Charles University in Prague in the 1920s and had his own law firm in Bratislava in the 1930s. After the Munich Agreement of 1938, he went into exile to France and Great Britain, where he worked at the Czechoslovak broadcast at the BBC for the exile government of Edvard Beneš. After the Second World War, Clementis' political career at the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry blossomed. In 1945, he became Assistant Secretary of State under Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk. After Masaryk's mysterious death in 1948, Clementis was appointed foreign minister. This biography offers an unprecedented insight into the mind of a Slovak leftist intellectual of the interwar generation who died at the command of the comrade he had admired since his youth: Generalissimus Stalin.

The Sitges International School of Physics is the second one to be held in Spain on the Many Body Problem. The first one took place on Mallorca during the summer 1969. The aim of the school was mainly to direct the interest of professors and students of Spanish Universities tow~rds this concrete field of re search. For this purpose 55 ~specially prepared lectures were given by an eminent collection of lecturers. Besides, a school of this class contri butes to the scientific formation of many students from other countries. Also, in a meeting of this kind, personal contacts are born that favour future co~laboration between scientists. In view of the success of the first two schools, we intend to foster future international meetings on this subject until interest in it is consolidated in Spain. All the lectures given are published here except those of Professor P.C. Martin whose lec tures have previously been published. I would like to thank all those people who helped to make this school a success, and in particular: Prof. J.L. Villar-Palasi, Minister of Educa tion of Spain for sponsoring the school. Dr. R.
