American criminal justice is a dysfunctional mess. Cops are too violent, the punishments are too punitive, and the so-called Land of the Free imprisons more people than any other country in the world. Understanding why means focusing on color—not only on black or white (which already has been studied extensively), but also on green. The problem is that nearly everyone involved in criminal justice—including district attorneys, elected judges, the police, voters, and politicians—faces bad incentives. Local towns often would rather send people to prison on someone else’s dime than pay for more effective policing themselves. Local police forces can enrich themselves by turning into warrior cops who steal from innocent civilians. Voters have very little incentive to understand the basic facts about crime or how to fix it—and vote accordingly. And politicians have every incentive to cater to voters’ worst biases. Injustice for All systematically diagnoses why and where American criminal justice goes wrong, and offers functional proposals for reform. By changing who pays for what, how people are appointed, how people are punished, and which things are criminalized, we can make the US a country which guarantees justice for all. Key Features: Shows how bad incentives, not "bad apples," cause the dysfunction in American criminal justice Focuses not only on overincarceration, but on overcriminalization and other failures of the criminal justice system Provides a philosophical and practical defense of reducing the scope of what’s considered criminal activity Crosses ideological lines, highlighting both the weaknesses and strengths of liberal, conservative, and libertarian agendas Fully integrates tools from philosophy and social science, making this stand out from the many philosophy books on punishment, on the one hand, and the solely empirical studies from sociology and criminal science, on the other Avoids disciplinary jargon, broadening the book’s suitability for students and researchers in many different fields and for an interested general readership Offers plausible reforms that realign specific incentives with the public good.

As heard on NPR's Fresh Air Recommended by The New York Times' Sam Roberts “Start Here is an urgent and timely primer on the approaches that are working and don’t require federal approval or political revolution to end one of the most pressing justice issues the country faces today.” —Brooklyn Daily Eagle A bold agenda for criminal justice reform based on equal parts pragmatism and idealism, from the visionary director of the Center for Court Innovation, a leader of the reform movement Everyone knows that the United States leads the world in incarceration, and that our political process is gridlocked. What can be done right now to reduce the number of people sent to jail and prison? This essential book offers a concrete roadmap for both professionals and general readers who want to move from analysis to action. In this forward-looking, next-generation criminal justice reform book, Greg Berman and Julian Adler of the Center for Court Innovation highlight the key lessons from these programs—engaging the public in preventing crime, treating all defendants with dignity and respect, and linking people to effective community-based interventions rather than locking them up. Along the way, they tell a series of gripping stories, highlighting gang members who have gotten their lives back on track, judges who are transforming their courtrooms, and reformers around the country who are rethinking what justice looks like. While Start Here offers no silver bullets, it does put forth a suite of proven reforms—from alternatives to bail to diversion programs for mentally ill defendants—that will improve the lives of thousands of people right now. Start Here is a must-read for everyone who wants to start dismantling mass incarceration without waiting for a revolution or permission. Proceeds from the book will support the Center for Court Innovation's reform efforts.

Renowned pastor and bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller shares his most provocative and illuminating message yet. It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn’t it full of regressive views? Didn’t it condone slavery? Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need. In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. This book offers readers a new understanding of modern justice and human rights that will resonate with both the faithful and the skeptical.

And Justice for ELs is a resource every school leader must read right away—for that matter, keep within arm’s reach because you’re certain to refer to it constantly. Ayanna Cooper, a former U.S. Department of State English Language Specialist, has "been there, done that" and is now prepared to share with you how best to translate today’s federal mandates into actionable steps for ensuring the civil rights of our nation’s multilingual learners. Because it is impossible to provide specific advice or guidance for every possible situation, Ayanna focuses on the "need-to knows" for making informed decisions within your own building: Eight questions you must ask—and how to obtain answers—before planning English language development services The most common EL program models, with special emphasis on scheduling, along with specific challenges and appropriate staffing The why and how of evaluating English language education, regardless of the evaluation tool, and ways to facilitate conversations with teachers before and after observation How to determine the type of professional learning that will have the greatest impact in your unique context Recommendations for establishing productive relationships with linguistically diverse families and communities Just about every tool you could possibly need, including a glossary of acronyms, useful advocacy organizations, and templates for supporting professional learning But what you’ll love most is the way Ayanna "keeps it real." Every chapter is framed around a "What Would You Do?" scenario, for which she ultimately provides an answer(s) as well as guiding questions to help you think through the issues. Take a look for yourself. We know you’ll agree that And Justice for ELs is without question a one-of-a-kind resource. "And Justice for ELs is an excellent guide for practitioners who seek to provide their English learners with high-quality instruction in all subject areas. Too often such students are relegated an education that marginalizes them academically and fails to develop their native language skills. We can and must do a better job for these students, and in this book Ayanna Cooper shows us how." ~Pedro A. Noguera

Until We Reckon written by Danielle Sered and has been published by The New Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-05 with Law categories.

The award-winning “radically original” (The Atlantic) restorative justice leader, whose work the Washington Post has called “totally sensible and totally revolutionary,” grapples with the problem of violent crime in the movement for prison abolition A National Book Foundation Literature for Justice honoree A Kirkus “Best Book of 2019 to Fight Racism and Xenophobia” Winner of the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice Journalism Award Finalist for the Goddard Riverside Stephan Russo Book Prize for Social Justice In a book Democracy Now! calls a “complete overhaul of the way we’ve been taught to think about crime, punishment, and justice,” Danielle Sered, the executive director of Common Justice and renowned expert on violence, offers pragmatic solutions that take the place of prison, meeting the needs of survivors and creating pathways for people who have committed violence to repair harm. Critically, Sered argues that reckoning is owed not only on the part of individuals who have caused violence, but also by our nation for its overreliance on incarceration to produce safety—at a great cost to communities, survivors, racial equity, and the very fabric of our democracy. Although over half the people incarcerated in America today have committed violent offenses, the focus of reformers has been almost entirely on nonviolent and drug offenses. Called “innovative” and “truly remarkable” by The Atlantic and “a top-notch entry into the burgeoning incarceration debate” by Kirkus Reviews, Sered’s Until We Reckon argues with searing force and clarity that our communities are safer the less we rely on prisons and jails as a solution for wrongdoing. Sered asks us to reconsider the purposes of incarceration and argues persuasively that the needs of survivors of violent crime are better met by asking people who commit violence to accept responsibility for their actions and make amends in ways that are meaningful to those they have hurt—none of which happens in the context of a criminal trial or a prison sentence.

Justice Restored written by Howell W. Woltz and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-06 with Correctional law categories.

International bestseller "Justice Restored," by veteran author and journalist, Howell Woltz, ("Justice Denied", "The Way Back to America", "The Path" and "Gulag Amerika") is his most explosive expos to date of America's failed judicial system. Woltz proves in this highly readable expos that U.S. prosecutors knowingly (or uncaringly) "get it wrong" in 8 out of every 10 cases they bring before U.S. courts. After speaking out on this issue publicly, (TEDx talk in 2014), Woltz was threatened by U.S. officials in an effort to silence him. This ultimately led to his leaving the country to continue his work (Woltz now lives in Poland), though his facts have been acknowledged true by reviewing state and federal courts. 5,760 capital cases--almost every such case over a 23 year period--has now been reviewed by state and federal courts and 73% of them were proven to have "reversible error", while 9% of the defendants were proven by the record itself to have been innocent when targeted by the prosecutor. (see, A BROKEN SYSTEM: ERROR RATES IN CAPITAL CASES, Prof. James S. Liebman, Columbia University). After indisputably proving the need for reform in the early pages of Justice Restore, Woltz then lays out a 10 step plan to restore our system of justice to what it once was. These steps back to Rule of Law are each buttressed by a heartbreaking personal story of a wrongfully convicted citizen the author personally assisted in seeking justice."Justice Restored: 10 steps to end mass incarceration in America" has been endorsed by The Center for Teaching the Rule of Law, and is considered a must read for every U.S. citizen. As admitted by the federal government, "The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 71 million people--approximately 25 percent of the American population--have a criminal record." (BNA Criminal Law Reporter, May of 2010).With only 5% of the world's population, the United States holds 25% of its prisoners--a record for human history. No nation has ever incarcerated so many of its own citizens.Woltz has given a clear roadmap for ending this national disaster in "Justice Restored"and in an interview on Public Radio, he recently stated, "If anyone had told me 30 years ago that I could write a book on the unlikely topic of 'mass incarceration in America'--or that it would become a best-seller--I would have never believed it. 1/4 of the American population, however, has now suffered these injustices personally--as well as their families--and they are the ones who have made 'Justice Restored' an international bestseller."Buy Justice Restored today. The mayority of the human beings go throught the stage decesive of purpose; freedom; call; work; and direction in each one of the lives; stage during which unfortunately many follow their own will; some are overtaken by the responsabilities and the trend; while some others deviate themselves from the perfect will of God the Lord; for their lives; a great number of individuals are conformed to the day to day waiting for what would come. However; exist people in whose internal being is burning the will and the call of God for their lives; people to which God mades a call Because God is the one that in yourselves produce the want or the will as the doing; for his good will. (Phil 2:13). Is necessary to respond to God compromising with God to obey to his voice and then God would respond with the accomplishment of his voice; meanwhile of his word which is the will of God with the life of each believer In what you would offer over my althar corrupted bread. And you said: In what we had dishonored you? In thinking that the table of Jehovah is despreciable. The time of assuming the service and the call from God is today; God is talking to you and is calling you the time is now. (Rom 13:11).
