[Ecumenism in Mind. Karl Barth's Theology and its Interdenominational Reception] Karl Barth was a dialogical thinker, who developed his theological positions through productive engagement with other theological conceptions and with many other theologians, across denominational boundaries. Being himself of Reformed confession, he engaged extensively in particular with Lutheran and Catholic theologians. For this reason many of his writings, especially his "Letter to the Romans" and his "Church Dogmatics", raised great interest and caused a broad reception in various denominations. He left traces not only in Lutheran and Catholic theology, but also for example with Anglicans and Waldensians. This collection of essays gathers contributions that explore these connections and uncover the ecumenical potentials of Barth's theology, not least his ecclesiology. The volume documents an international conference, which took place in spring 2019 at the University of Münster.

Due to his critical theory on religion Karl Barth (1886–1968) is considered as a representative of a theology which is incapable of dialogue and which hinders the debate both with the modern and with non-Christian religions. However, representatives of non-Christian religions and ecumenism are highly interested in Barth's theology. The present volume offers a fundamental reflection in which Barth's critical theory on religion is analysed on the basis of contemporary religious pluralism. Furthermore, representatives of five leading religious traditions present Barth's reception of their religion and their own perception of his theology. The volume terminates with an analysis of the meaning of Barth's theory on religion and his criticism for the ecumenical dialogue.

Iulius Africanus (3rd cent.) is a fascinating writer in a period of transition. Widely travelled, he belongs to the intellectual élite of the second sophistic. His two main works present a similar encyclopedic approach, but very different contents. He can be considered the “father of Christian chronography”, since he authored the first Christian world chronicle (Chronographiae). However, he also wrote a comprehensive and multifaceted manual of many fields of knowledge, where the religious character is open to debate. The preserved fragments of the Cesti treat military, technical, medical and many other topics. These texts are presented in an entirely new critical edition. The transmission of the texts as well as questions of authenticity are highly complex. Compared to the previous edition (Vieillefond 1970), considerable progress has been reached in terms of both, quantity and quality of the material. Hitherto unknown texts have been included, and in the case of dubious authorship all necessary information is provided for a realistic picture of the transmission. In the introduction, all relevant channels of transmission are discussed. The edition is accompanied by notes and a new English translation.

Rebecca's Revival is the remarkable story of a Caribbean woman--a slave turned evangelist--who helped inspire the rise of black Christianity in the Atlantic world. All but unknown today, Rebecca Protten left an enduring influence on African-American religion and society. Born in 1718, Protten had a childhood conversion experience, gained her freedom from bondage, and joined a group of German proselytizers from the Moravian Church. She embarked on an itinerant mission, preaching to hundreds of the enslaved Africans of St. Thomas, a Danish sugar colony in the West Indies. Laboring in obscurity and weathering persecution from hostile planters, Protten and other black preachers created the earliest African Protestant congregation in the Americas. Protten's eventful life--the recruiting of converts, an interracial marriage, a trial on charges of blasphemy and inciting of slaves, travels to Germany and West Africa--placed her on the cusp of an emerging international Afro-Atlantic evangelicalism. Her career provides a unique lens on this prophetic movement that would soon sweep through the slave quarters of the Caribbean and North America, radically transforming African-American culture. Jon Sensbach has pieced together this forgotten life of a black visionary from German, Danish, and Dutch records, including letters in Protten's own hand, to create an astounding tale of one woman's freedom amidst the slave trade. Protten's life, with its evangelical efforts on three continents, reveals the dynamic relations of the Atlantic world and affords great insight into the ways black Christianity developed in the New World.
