Under the pseudonym Eza Boto, Mongo Beti wrote Ville cruelle (Cruel City) in 1954 before he came to the world's attention with the publication of Le pauvre Christ de Bomba (The Poor Christ of Bomba). Cruel City tells the story of a young man's attempt to cope with capitalism and the rapid urbanization of his country. Banda, the protagonist, sets off to sell the year's cocoa harvest to earn the bride price for the woman he has chosen to wed. Due to a series of misfortunes, Banda loses both his crop and his bride to be. Making his way to the city, Banda is witness to a changing Africa, and as his journey progresses, the novel mirrors these changes in its style and language. Published here with the author's essay "Romancing Africa," the novel signifies a pivotal moment in African literature, a deliberate challenge to colonialism, and a new kind of African writing.

La France a gardé en mémoire la loi de juillet 1901, au nom de laquelle sont déposés les statuts d'innombrables associations. Mais ce texte libéral a eu sa « face sombre » : son titre III mettait en place une législation sévère à l'encontre des congrégations religieuses, dont la République voulait briser l'influence politique et sociale. Le gouvernement d'Émile Combes, formé en 1902, choisit d'appliquer le texte avec rigueur, avant de faire voter la loi de juillet 1904 qui interdit tout enseignement aux congréganistes. Lorsque la Séparation intervient, il n'y a plus en France, officiellement, de jésuites ni de Frères. C'est l'heure d'une catastrophe sans précédent pour les congrégations et leurs dizaines de milliers de membres. Les unes demandent une autorisation qui leur est refusée ; d'autres choisissent d'emblée la clandestinité ou encore l'exil. Des centaines de couvents, collèges et écoles, des milliers de religieux et religieuses, et bon nombre de leurs élèves, gagnent les pays limitrophes de la France mais aussi l'ensemble de la Méditerranée, le Canada, les États-Unis, l'Amérique latine et jusqu'au Japon ou l'Australie. Exil planétaire, vécu dans la douleur mais aussi l'esprit missionnaire, et qui répand en deux traînées parallèles le catholicisme à la française, la langue et les livres nationaux. Il arrive, du reste, que la France soutienne, au Levant, des enseignants dont elle ne veut plus sur le sol métropolitain. On n'avait jamais pris la mesure de cet exil méconnu, le dernier qui ait marqué l'histoire politico-religieuse tourmentée de la France. Ce livre impose de comprendre la législation de 1901-1904 et les réponses que les congrégations lui ont apportées, avant d'inviter le lecteur à entamer un véritable tour du monde sur les traces des religieux en exil.
