Les versions occitanes du Nouveau Testament sont relativement nombreuses, tandis que de lAncien Testament nous navons quune seule, le ms. BN fr. 2426. Et ce texte a ceci de particulier que la traduction ne repose pas sur la Vulgate, mais sur la version française de la Bible dAcre. En outre il faut ajouter que cet Ancien Testament est lacunaire: il y manquent les Livres des Rois, les Chroniques, presque tous les Prophètes, les Livres poétiques Les textes retenus ne sont quen partie de vraies traductions, mais ressemblent souvent plutôt à des paraphrases ou à des résumés brutalement abrégés. Notre manuscrit date de la première moitié du 15e siècle et provient probablement de la partie orientale de lOccitanie. Il est difficile à déchiffrer, peu soigné et plein derreurs. Nous avons essayé den donner une édition critique lisible et qui tient compte autant que possible de la structuration en chapitres et versets de la Vulgate.

Le deuxième volume de cette édition des Éléments de l'Ancien Testament en occitan selon une rédaction conservée dans un manuscrit du début du 15e siècle (ms. BN fr. 2426) contient trois textes analytiques et interprétatifs. Le premier analyse la langue du texte en scrutant le domaine graphophono¬logique d'un côté, les données morpho-syntaxiques de l'autre. La deuxième partie s'occupe du lexique des Éléments de L'Ancien Testament. Elle tient surtout compte des graphies inusuelles, voire bizarres ou aberrantes, des significatons rares et même nulle part ailleurs attestées. La troisième partie, l'Index des noms, identifie les noms de personne et les noms de lieu qui dans notre texte sont souvent brutalement corrompus et non spontanément identifiables avec leurs correspondants latins, grecs ou hébreux; j'essaie de les intégrer dans leur contexte organique et historique.

This volume provides the first book-length study of the controversial topic of Verb Second and related properties in a range of Medieval Romance varieties. It presents an examination and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data from Old French, Occitan, Sicilian, Venetian, Spanish, and Sardinian, in order to assess whether these were indeed Verb Second languages. Sam Wolfe argues that V-to-C movement is a point of continuity across all the medieval varieties - unlike in the modern Romance languages - but that there are rich patterns of synchronic and diachronic variation in the medieval period that have not previously been observed and investigated. These include differences in the syntax-pragmatics mapping, the locus of verb movement, the behaviour of clitic pronouns, the syntax of subject positions, matrix/embedded asymmetries, and the null argument properties of the languages in question. The book outlines a detailed formal cartographic analysis of both the attested synchronic patterns and the diachronic evolution of Romance clausal structure. The findings have widespread implications for the understanding of both the key typological property of Verb Second and the development of Latin into the modern Romance languages.

Medieval Occitania, a geographical and linguistic area often referred to as 'the South of France', 'the South', 'the Midi', or more loosely 'Provence', was politically diverse but culturally coherent. It was here that the troubadours created Courtly Love and a new poetic language, which together were to affect the whole course of European literature and sensibilities. The essays made readily accessible in this collection reflect the author's many-sided interests in the troubadours and the society from which they sprang: the historical and cultural place of the women forming the ostensible objects of their desire, veneration, or anxieties; the extent to which French notions of chivalry penetrated the South; the nature and meaning of various elements of court culture; the precocious development of medical science in this region; its complex responses to the Crusades; and the question of Occitan identity.
