In den vergangen Jahren hat sich der Wettbewerb deutscher Städte und Regionen untereinander als Anbieter von Wirtschafts-, Tourismus-, Wohn- und Freizeitstandorten erheblich verschärft. 1 Grundlegende Veränderungen in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zwingen die Städte, ihr Handeln den neuen Anforderungen anzupassen. Das Instrument "Stadtmarketing" wird oft als neue zukunftsweisende Möglichkeit gesehen, die Attraktivität einer Stadt zu steigern, um sich so im Wettbewerb gegen andere Städte durchsetzen zu können. Zum Aufbau und zur Unterstützung eines positiven Stadtimage können verschiedene Instrumente des Marketing-Mix genutzt werden. In den letzten Jahren haben sich Events als neues Instrument zur Verbesserung der Attraktivität einer Stadt etabliert. Bei einer entsprechenden Ausrichtung können diese einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Verbesserung des Stadtimage leisten. In Berlin haben sich in den letzten Jahren viele Events etabliert. Eines davon ist die "Lange Nacht der Museen", welche 1997 das erste Mal stattfand. Heute ist dieses Event aus dem Stadtbild Berlins nicht mehr wegzudenken. Zweimal jährlich öffnen Berliner Museen für eine Nacht ihre Türen. Bus-Shuttles verbinden die Museen miteinander, in denen Konzerte, Sonderaustellungen, Lesungen und vieles mehr stattfinden. Die Einführung dieses Konzepts war so erfolgreich, dass es bald von anderen Städten übernommen wurde. So gibt es in Deutschland inzwischen 99 Städte, die eine Nacht der Museen und Galerien durchführen. Nicht nur in Deutschland fand diese Art Kultur zu vermitteln großen Anklang. Auch in Sydney, Basel, Buenos Aires, Paris und Belgrad lassen sich Projekte nach dem Berliner Konzept finden. Aus diesem Grund wird sich diese Arbeit mit der „Langen Nacht der Museen“ in Berlin beschäftigen und nicht genutzte Potenziale aufzeigen. In dem ersten Teil der Arbeit werden Grundlagen zu Begriffen wie Stadtmarketing, Event und Museumsmarketing dargestellt.
