With the departure of European Muslims to the “Islamic State” and a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe in recent years, the questions of why and how individuals radicalize to Jihadi extremism attracted keen interest. This thesis examines how individuals radicalize by applying a theoretical framework that primarily refers to social capital theory, the economics of religion, and social movement theory. The analysis of the biographical backgrounds, pathways of radicalization, and network connections of more than 1,300 Jihadi extremists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland shows that radicalization primarily need to be considered as a social process of isolation from former social contacts and affiliation with a new religious group. Radicalization is characterized by the transformation of social capital and often channeled through so-called “strong ties” to friends and family members. These peer networks constitute the social fundament of radical clusters on the local level which are usually linked to a broader milieu through exclusive mosque communities and religious authorities. Bonding social capital within these radical groups minimizes the risk of betrayal and promotes trust essential for clandestine and risky activities.

Emotions have moved center stage in many contemporary debates over religious diversity and multicultural recognition. As in other contested fields, emotions are often one-sidedly discussed as quintessentially subjective and individual phenomena, neglecting their social and cultural constitution. Moreover, emotionality in these debates is frequently attributed to the religious subject alone, disregarding the affective anatomy of the secular. This volume addresses these shortcomings, bringing into conversation a variety of disciplinary perspectives on religious and secular affect and emotion. The volume emphasizes two analytical perspectives: on the one hand, chapters take an immanent perspective, focusing on subjective feelings and emotions in relation to the religious and the secular. On the other hand, chapters take a relational perspective, looking at the role of affect and emotion in how the religious and the secular constitute one another. These perspectives cut across the three main parts of the volume: the first one addressing historical intertwinements of religion and emotion, the second part emphasizing affects, emotions, and religiosity, and the third part looking at specific sensibilities of the secular. The thirteen chapters provide a well-balanced composition of theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches to these areas of inquiry, discussing both historical and contemporary cases.

Durch sprachliche Handlungen können extremistische Ideologien geschaffen und potenziell beeinflussbare Personen erreicht werden. Um Muster der sprachlichen Realitätskonstituierung und das Indoktrinationspotenzial von Propagandatexten auf mehreren Ebenen zu erfassen, untersucht die Studie deutschsprachige digital verbreitete Magazine des sogenannten Islamischen Staates in vier Schritten. Zuerst erfolgt eine textsortenlinguistische Beschreibung von situativer Einbettung und Struktur der bimodalen Texte unter Einbezug des interdisziplinären Forschungsstandes. Das sprachindoktrinative Potenzial der Propagandamagazine steht im Fokus einer korpuslinguistischen Analyse der Sprachgebrauchsmuster. Anhand des propositionalen Gehalts werden gemäß der Referenz- und Textweltmodelltheorie die konzeptuellen Muster der sozialen Realität abstrahiert. In einer Narrationsanalyse wird erforscht, wie diese durch die Beschreibung von Einzelschicksalen exemplifiziert werden. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Synthese der Ergebnisse und einer interdisziplinären Diskussion ihrer Bedeutung für individuelle und soziale Radikalisierungsprozesse sowie für extremistische Ideologien, die nicht dem dschihadistischen Spektrum zuzuordnen sind.
