En ella nos relata cómo, al día siguiente de la catástrofe, un pescador español navega hacia los pedazos de tierra que habían formado parte de la isla para buscar algo de valor entre los restos, muchos de ellos sembrados de cadáveres. Una pequeña niña criolla todavía viva resulta ser su principal hallazgo. Aparentemente, sus padres han muerto en el huracán... La nueva vida de esta joven, Chita, transcurre en un marco excepcional que Hearn conoce y describe a la perfección, con una prosa de tal intensidad musical que logra que el mar, el infinito paisaje lleno de islas del Golfo de México, el viento y la vegetación sean, tanto como sus inolvidables personajes, protagonistas de esta historia tan singular como cautivadora.
