Il volume ripercorre i testi ungarettiani alla luce delle opere che il poeta tradusse lungo tutto l'arco della propria esperienza letteraria. La traduzione si rivela così strumento per arrivare a conclusioni riferite all’atto stesso della creazione poetica, esaminando le influenze che tale attività elaborativa ha sull’opera in proprio del poeta che traduce. Vengono evidenziati i reciproci rapporti che si instaurano tra traduttore e scrittore in proprio e tra autore straniero e autore-traduttore e sono analizzati inoltre i modi con cui la traduzione si inserisce talvolta, attraverso il poeta traduttore, nella tradizione letteraria italiana, secondo un processo osmotico e reciproco. L'atto traduttivo rappresenta in questo senso un arricchimento della lingua e della letteratura di arrivo ed è spesso mosso, come si pone in luce nel corso di questo saggio, dalle esigenze di innovazione della lingua letteraria. Gli strumenti d’indagine utilizzati sono stati tutti i documenti che, unitamente ai testi letterari stessi, potessero recare il segno del legame intimo che sussiste tra l'opera tradotta da Giuseppe Ungaretti e la scrittura in proprio: s’è tenuto conto della corrispondenza, delle lezioni universitarie, dei contributi sparsi su rivista unitamente alle interviste e agli scritti inediti. La riflessione è però partita sempre dal testo (originale, tradotto e in proprio) e i documenti hanno, di volta in volta, confermato o indirizzato le nostre intuizioni. Sono state analizzate anche le diverse redazioni dei testi, dando rilievo alle varianti d’autore (sia dell’opera in proprio che delle traduzioni) che si sono rivelate in molti casi un ulteriore utile strumento di indagine. Tra la scrittura e la riscrittura di una poesia, si inserisce sempre nel caso di Ungaretti l'esperienza della traduzione, che rappresenta ogni volta il luogo privilegiato per l'incontro e lo scambio con i poeti di tradizioni ed epoche diverse.

In 1809 the little-known artist William Blake held an exhibition of 16 paintings in a private house in Soho in the west end of London. Works inspired by Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and John Milton's "Paradise Lost" sat alongside biblical scenes and Arthurian legend. The exhibition was not a success; the only review in the press was extremely unfavourable and few of the public came. One of those who did was the poet Charles Lamb, who later described the pictures as 'hard, dry, yet with grace', and the catalogue that accompanied the show as 'mystical and full of vision'. It is this catalogue that Tate Publishing are once again making available.
