Romero, gilt als Meilenstein in der Geschichte des Horrorfilms und als wegweisend für das ganze Genre; ein Genre, das – wie Tony Williams meint – heutzutage wieder fast gänzlich frei von sozialer Bedeutung ist und sich an einem unmotivierten und sinnlosen Sensationalismus orientiert. Williams betont, dass kein Kinofilm wirklich zu verstehen ist, ohne seine kulturellen Einflüsse zu berücksichtigen. Aber Romero gelang es mit Night of the Living Dead förmlich ein Abbild der kulturellen und politischen Stimmungen und Ereignisse der späten 60er Jahre in den Vereinigen Staaten zu konservieren; einer Dekade, die Phillips als die dunkelste in der Geschichte Amerikas bezeichnet. Die folgenden Kapitel sollen zeigen, wie Night of the Living Dead die vorherrschende „Schlösserromantik“ und den phantastischen Horror des klassischen Horrorfilms der 30er bis 50er Jahre aufbricht, indem er die Bedrohung und Angst in den dem Zuschauer vertrauten Alltag bringt; also aus einer Bedrohung, die ursprünglich außerhalb des gewohnten Alltags zu verorten war, eine unmittelbare und innere Bedrohung schafft. Um die sozialkritische Dimension des Films zu hinterfragen, wird nach einem Rückblick auf die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Ereignisse des Jahres 1968 dargestellt, in welchem Kontext Night of the Living Dead zu seiner Zeit steht und auf welche Art und Weise der Film Stellung zu realen Begebenheiten bezieht.

Romeros erstem Spielfilm Night of the living Dead (1968) im Genre des amerikanischen Horrofilms zu betonen und ihn aus seinem kulturellen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kontext heraus zu analysieren. Die Bedeutung von Romeros Machwerk, das bis zum heutigen Tag 5 Fortsetzungen (von Romero selbst) und etliche Remakes bzw. Variationen nach sich gezogen hat, ergibt sich sowohl aus seiner Stellung zum klassischen amerikanischen Horrorfilm der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, als auch aufgrund seiner Innovationen im Genre des amerikanischen Horrorfilms Ende der 1960er Jahre, womit Romeros Film auch dem teilweise wilden und ungezügelten Kino des New Hollywood zugerechnet werden kann. So sind es nicht nur die scheinbar unmotivierten Gewaltexzesse auf der Leinwand, deren nihilistischer Terror bisher ungesehen war, sondern auch ästhetische und narrative Neuerungen innerhalb des Genres sowie die explizite Bezugnahme auf Politik und Gesellschaft der Zeit auf Bildebene, die Romeros ersten Spielfilm zu einem wegweißendem und bedeutendem Machwerk und schließlich zum Vorbild eines neu entstehenden Subgenres des Horrorfilms werden ließen. Bevor die verschiedenen relevanten Facetten in NIGHT analysiert werden, soll zunächst der klassische amerikanische Horrorfilm vorgestellt werden, der bereits 1932 im Film White Zombie (R: Victor Halperin) die Figur des Untoten bzw. Zombies verwendet, um anschließend Romeros Film in den kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Kontext der 1960er Jahre - mit Fokus auf die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und natürlich Hollywood – zu situieren.
